Job Description
Lutheran Social Services of Southern California (LSSSC) is a well-established non-profit social service agency that has been serving the community since its incorporation in 1946. Rooted in a history that began in December 1944 with a coalition of Lutheran congregations from San Diego and Los Angeles, LSSSC was founded with a mission dedicated to assisting families in need. Over the decades, it has grown substantially and now offers over 45 diverse programs and services across 18 locations throughout Southern California. As part of the Lutheran Services in America (LSA) network, LSSSC is committed to serving vulnerable individuals and families with dignity, respect, and compassion.
The organization's mission is ignited by faith, focused on living out God's love by embracing, equipping, and empowering vulnerable individuals, families, and communities toward self-sufficiency. This mission underpins every aspect of LSSSC's work, driving the efforts to provide essential social services that improve the well-being and quality of life for those that they serve. LSSSC is proud to have a longstanding tradition of community-oriented service with a deep understanding of the diverse needs of Southern California's population.
The Prep Cook position is an integral part of the food service operation within LSSSC. This role supports daily kitchen functions by performing food preparation, sanitation, and basic cooking tasks under the direction of the Kitchen Associate. The Prep Cook's responsibilities are essential for ensuring that the meal service to tenants is executed efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with food safety regulations. This role requires hands-on support in ingredient preparation, workstation setup, inventory assistance, and maintaining an organized and hygienic kitchen environment.
Working at LSSSC as a Prep Cook means contributing to a mission-driven organization that values teamwork, safety, and high standards of food quality. This position offers flexible shift hours that cover meal preparation and service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including weekends and holidays, to ensure uninterrupted meals for tenants. The position pays between $18.00 and $22.00 per hour, allowing candidates to engage in meaningful work while earning a competitive wage.
The Prep Cook will be involved in washing, chopping, slicing, and portioning various ingredients, assisting with simple food items such as salads and sandwiches, and carefully following standardized recipes and portion control guidelines. The role also includes setting up prep stations, maintaining cleanliness throughout shifts, and supporting inventory management by applying FIFO practices. Adherence to strict food safety and sanitation standards is critical, including compliance with the California Retail Food Code and County Health Department regulations.
Additionally, the Prep Cook is expected to work collaboratively with kitchen staff and program personnel, participate in special events and large meal preparations, and report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards promptly. The role does not involve supervisory responsibilities but requires strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Candidates should possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with prior food preparation or kitchen experience preferred though not mandatory. Certification such as the San Bernardino County Food Handler Card is required and must be obtained within the specified timeframe. The role necessitates basic math and computer skills, fluency in English with the ability to communicate clearly, and a willingness to work with diverse populations respecting dietary restrictions and accessibility needs.
Overall, this Prep Cook position at Lutheran Social Services of Southern California is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking to make a direct impact on community wellbeing through food service in a supportive and mission-driven workplace.
