Job Description

JASA (Jewish Association Serving the Aging) is a well-established non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults through comprehensive programs and services. As a leading provider of senior services in the community, JASA operates various centers and initiatives focused on supporting older adults in maintaining independence, health, and social engagement. The position available is that of a Maintenance Worker within one of JASA's senior centers. This role is crucial for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for the center's members, staff, and visitors. The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for a wide range of custodial, repair, and general maintenance duties, ensuring that the facility is kept in excellent condition. This position operates Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with a total of 35 hours per week. The Maintenance Worker will play a key role in supporting the center's operations, including emergency preparations such as Cooling Center activations.

This full-time role requires a hands-on approach to facilities upkeep, including cleaning floors, windows, and fixtures, as well as performing minor repairs on plumbing, electrical systems, doors, and furniture. The Maintenance Worker will also assist with room setups for programs and meetings, ensuring that spaces are functional and properly arranged. The position demands physical stamina for tasks such as heavy lifting, climbing stairs and ladders, and bending. A valid driver’s license is considered helpful but not mandatory. The ability to communicate effectively in English and follow directions is essential for safety and coordination with the Director of Facilities and Operations.

Job Requirements

  • High school graduate preferred
  • Must be available to participate in coverage of Cooling Center hours, Make Up Days or other necessary responses for older adult center members
  • Ability to read, speak and follow directions in English
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting, moving or carrying packages, furniture or office equipment
  • Must be able to climb stairs, climb a ladder, and bend
  • Valid driver's license is helpful

Job Qualifications

  • High School graduate preferred
  • Ability to read, speak and follow directions in English
  • Experience in general maintenance or custodial work is beneficial
  • Knowledge of basic repair techniques for plumbing, electrical, and carpentry is a plus
  • Ability to work effectively with others and follow instructions
  • Commitment to safety and attention to detail

Job Duties

  • Cleans, dusts, mops, washes or waxes floors
  • Washes windows and fixtures within the building or on the grounds of the facility
  • Shampoos, sweeps or vacuums floors, empties ashtrays, wastepaper baskets, and collects rubbish
  • Places garbage in bags or bundles with twine for removal
  • Dusts desks, chairs, window sills, pictures on walls, tops of file cabinets and other office furniture and equipment
  • Cleans and disinfects the center kitchen and lavatories
  • Restocks paper dispensers as needed
  • Removes marks from walls, washes and waxes all floor tile and composition flooring
  • Cleans desks and conference table tops
  • Performs rough painting, seals leaks, replaces broken window panes
  • Repairs defective light switches, installs extension cords, replaces washers, cleans clogged plumbing lines, and performs minor plumbing repairs
  • Repairs doors, broken furniture, replaces loose tiles, plasters cracks and holes, replaces worn out parts of simple machines and equipment
  • Cleans and wipes equipment in mechanical rooms
  • Sets up rooms for lunch programs, classes or meetings
  • Cleans kitchen equipment, counter surfaces, utensils, stoves, sinks in food programs
  • Opens and closes the building, checks offices and floors, shuts off lights, secures building
  • Works with Director of Facilities and Operations to ensure compliance with City and State regulations and prepares for emergency situations
  • Performs other duties as assigned
