Job Description

Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital, a cornerstone of healthcare in the Akron community for over 100 years, is part of the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic health system. Recognized nationally for its excellence in patient care, medical research, and community service, Akron General exemplifies a commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered healthcare by a collaborative team of dedicated professionals. The hospital focuses not only on medical treatment but also on holistic well-being, including nutrition, comfort, and supportive services that create a healing environment for patients and their families.

The role of Porter at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital is an essential position that supports the Food Service department by maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards, as well as handling the requisition, receiving, storage, inventory, and distribution of food and food service supplies. This role is fundamental in promoting a clean and safe environment within the hospital and ensuring that nutritional needs are met efficiently and hygienically. Working as a Porter offers a unique opportunity to directly impact patient well-being by supporting the delivery of meals and maintaining a positive, sanitary atmosphere.

This position operates typically during the day and evening shifts, between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM or 11:30 AM and 8:00 PM, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to continuous quality service. Employees in this role perform various cleaning duties including sanitizing kitchen and dining equipment such as ovens, fryers, ranges, and refrigeration systems, along with washing pots and pans according to strict hygiene guidelines. The Porter is responsible for operating dish machines correctly, ensuring all dishwashing chemicals and temperatures meet safety standards, and properly maintaining waste disposal systems including grease filters, trash compactors, and cart elevators.

Attention to detail is critical as Porters also stock supplies, fill unit orders, maintain inventory accuracy, and monitor product quality and expiration dates. This role requires a reliable individual who adheres to safety protocols, reports discrepancies and accidents swiftly, and helps sustain high standards for cleanliness and operational efficiency across the Food Service department.

Porters contribute beyond cleaning by transporting clean wares, meals, and food/beverage items, supporting smooth food delivery to patients and departments, which can leave a positive impression on patients and families alike. This job demands physical stamina, willingness to perform repetitive tasks, and the capability to handle frequent hand and arm immersion in water and detergents. The offered pay range for this role is $15.00 to $18.44 per hour, with final compensation based on experience, skills, and education. In addition to competitive wages, Cleveland Clinic Akron General provides a comprehensive benefits package, reinforcing their commitment to employee welfare and job satisfaction.

Joining the team at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital as a Porter means becoming part of a respected institution that values dedicated service, teamwork, and the health and comfort of the people it serves. This role is ideal for individuals seeking a stable career in healthcare support, providing hands-on work that contributes directly to the patient experience and hospital operations.
