Job Description
Red Rabbit is a Black-owned School Food Management Company committed to enhancing communities of color across the North East and Mid-Atlantic regions through culturally relevant and nutritious school meals. Established in 2005, Red Rabbit has collaborated with hundreds of schools, districts, and food banks to deliver fresh, thoughtfully prepared, scratch-made foods that honor the cultural identities and health needs of the students they serve. As a MWBE-certified company, Red Rabbit emphasizes dignity, representation, and opportunity, striving to transform school dining into an experience that reflects the heritage and lived experiences of diverse urban communities. Their professionally trained chefs work both in commissaries and onsite in school cafeterias to provide meals prepared from farm-fresh ingredients, ensuring high quality and authenticity in every dish.
The Porter role at Red Rabbit is fundamental to maintaining the cleanliness, efficiency, and operational readiness of the kitchens that support meal production. Porters are integral members of a small team responsible for ensuring that the kitchen consistently exceeds Department of Health standards, that all equipment is functional, and that the environment is primed for daily meal service. This full-time, in-school position reports directly to the Head Chef and typically runs from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday, based in Washington, DC. The position offers a competitive wage of $17.00 to $19.00 per hour.
Ideal candidates for the role bring at least one year of experience working in high-volume kitchens, such as restaurants, hotels, or commissaries, coupled with a reliable attitude and the ability to work effectively as part of a fast-paced team. The role demands physical stamina, as candidates must be capable of standing for extended periods, bending, stooping, and safely lifting up to 50 pounds. Attention to detail and a proactive approach are critical, as is a positive disposition that contributes to a collaborative and supportive work environment. While bilingual skills in English and Spanish are preferred, they are not mandatory.
The Porter is tasked with comprehensive cleaning procedures including sanitation of countertops, cooking equipment, walk-in refrigerators, floors, hand sinks, dishes, and storage areas to surpass health and safety standards daily. Managing waste removal promptly, including trash, cardboard, and compost, is also a vital function to maintain a clean, efficient kitchen suitable for food preparation. Additionally, Porters play a supportive role in setting up the production team each day to ensure smooth meal services.
Working at Red Rabbit means more than just a job; it offers the chance to impact children’s lives positively and be part of a mission-driven company that values community and food justice. Beyond competitive pay, employees gain access to free, made-from-scratch lunches, comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance plans, professional development opportunities, and commuter benefits. Red Rabbit champions an inclusive workplace and is an Equal Opportunity Employer, welcoming applicants regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or background, ensuring a diverse and equitable hiring process.
