Job Description

CFH is a reputable organization operating under contract with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). As a contract agency, CFH complies with rigorous standards and reporting responsibilities mandated by DHS, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City. These stringent regulations ensure the agency consistently provides high-quality services to vulnerable populations while maintaining accountability and transparency. CFH is dedicated to supporting homeless individuals by delivering residential services within shelter environments, focusing on safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.

The role of Porter within CFH's Residential Services is a critical position entrusted with the maintenance and cleanliness of shelter facilities. This full-time position requires a committed individual capable of managing various maintenance and custodial duties to ensure the shelter’s environment remains safe, sanitary, and welcoming for residents and staff. Working as a Porter involves maintaining office spaces, kitchens, restrooms, public areas, and outdoor surroundings, including sidewalks and entryways. Given the residential nature of the shelter, the Porter is also responsible for promptly addressing safety hazards, performing preventative maintenance, assisting with minor repairs and painting, and coordinating with external specialists for seasonal tasks.

This role is essential in creating an environment where residents can feel secure and cared for. The Porter is responsible for regular inspections and upkeep so that all building facilities operate optimally and meet the compliance requirements set by governing bodies. The position demands physical stamina, as tasks include lifting furniture and appliances, handling garbage disposal according to New York City sanitation guidelines, and removing snow and ice during inclement weather to maintain safe walkways.

Additionally, the Porter assists with receiving and organizing deliveries, maintaining inventory of custodial supplies, and supports extermination efforts when necessary. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team are crucial, as the Porter often coordinates with facility management and contracted service providers. The role also involves maintaining accurate records as per company protocols, ensuring that all operational activities are documented and transparent.

CFH values dedication and reliability in its employees and offers a dynamic work environment where every day presents opportunities to make a tangible difference in the lives of the shelter's residents. This role is excellent for individuals who take pride in their work, have a strong work ethic, and enjoy working as part of a team to ensure a clean, safe, and functional living environment.
