Job Description

CFH is a dedicated contract agency operating in partnership with the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS). As an organization committed to supporting vulnerable populations, CFH plays a critical role in managing residential services under rigorous regulatory oversight. The agency is subject to regular audits and inspections by several authorities, including the NYC Department of Homeless Services, the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, and the Coalition for the Homeless of New York City. This ensures that CFH maintains high standards of operational integrity and compliance, providing safe and supportive environments for residents in need.

The current opportunity is for a Porter position within CFH’s Residential Services team. This role is essential in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of the shelter buildings and property. The Porter will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks that contribute to creating a welcoming and hygienic environment for residents, staff, and visitors. These duties include maintaining all areas of the facility — ranging from offices and kitchens to public gatherings spaces and exterior sidewalks. The Porter will also inspect the building daily to identify and address preventative maintenance needs, immediate repairs, and safety concerns to ensure the facility meets all safety codes and regulatory expectations.

In addition to cleaning and maintenance, the Porter will undertake physical tasks such as lifting and moving furniture and kitchen appliances, managing on-site projects like painting and repairs, and assisting with pest control efforts as needed. Collaboration with the facility manager is vital, especially in coordinating deliveries and logging packages, as well as maintaining accurate records as per company protocols and external regulations. Timely responsiveness to urgent situations such as spills or potential hazards is a critical part of the role.

The ideal candidate for this position will have at least three years of demonstrated experience in building maintenance, preferably with a background working in residential or shelter environments. The position requires physical stamina to handle lifting up to 70 pounds and the ability to perform physical tasks requiring bending, kneeling, and stooping regularly. Additionally, an effective communicator comfortable working in a team environment will thrive in this role. The position requires flexibility to work weekends and holidays as needed to support continuous operations.

CFH encourages applications from individuals with criminal records, endorsing equal opportunity employment and reflecting its commitment to diversity and inclusion. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute directly to the welfare and dignity of some of New York City’s most vulnerable populations by ensuring their living environment is well-maintained and safe.
