The role of the Municipal Pool Supervisor is crucial to the City's mission of maintaining high standards in aquatic recreation. The Supervisor’s responsibilities extend from overseeing routine pool maintenance and water quality testing to supervising staff and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations. This position requires a professional with current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and a recognized Swim Instructor certification. The ideal candidate will possess at least two years of experience in lifeguarding, swim instruction, or coaching, preferably with some supervisory experience.
As a key member of the aquatic management team, the Municipal Pool Supervisor registers pool participants, schedules activities such as swim lessons, water safety instruction, and aquatic events including pool parties and athletic programs. This role demands meticulous attention to safety protocols, including the oversight of emergency responses such as water rescues and first aid administration. The supervisor also handles financial transactions, reconciles cash drawers, and maintains accurate bookkeeping and reporting documentation. Handling patron inquiries, resolving complaints, and writing accident and incident reports are part of daily duties, requiring strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain professional composure.

Job Requirements
- Must possess current certificates for American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer at the time of application
- must have a swim instructor certificate from a certified establishment such as American Red Cross, Ellis, Starfish, or City of Yuma
- high school diploma or GED equivalent
- minimum two years of experience in lifeguarding and swim lesson instruction or coaching
- must be at least 18 years of age
- valid Arizona State Driver's License required
- must maintain physical fitness to meet Department standards
- prior supervisory experience preferred

- knowledge of water safety, swimming and diving instructional and certification methods and techniques
- knowledge of recreational activities for children, adolescents, adults, senior citizens and or special populations
- knowledge of principles of water chemistry, chlorination, and pH balancing
- knowledge of money handling and bookkeeping procedures and methods
- skill in making decisions according to department policies and procedures
- skill in understanding and interpreting recreation policies, regulations, and state and federal laws
- skill in promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior
- skill in teaching water safety, swimming and diving techniques
- skill in monitoring pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards
- skill in effectively using emergency techniques for standard water approach, rescue and resuscitation
- skill in acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations and promoting safety standards
Job Duties
- Manages daily operations of a municipal swimming pool
- registers participants as needed
- supervises, schedules, assigns and evaluates assigned staff
- controls pool operations to assure that safety and water quality rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the facility and all equipment are in safe operating condition
- schedules pool activities such as parties, water athletics, swim lessons, and water safety instruction
- oversees cash transactions, reconciles cash drawers and bookkeeping records, and makes bank deposits, prepares a variety of written reports
- monitors swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents
- rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and applies cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid
- oversees the application of first aid and CPR in emergency situations
- inspects swimming pool for cleanliness and performs routine maintenance, including tests of water in the pool to determine chemical balance of chlorinators
- maintains pool facilities
- resolves routine problems
- handles issues, inquiries, and complaints from patrons
- writes accident and incident reports
- recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe conditions, accidents and injuries
- supports the relationship between the City of Yuma and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff
- promotes the City goals and priorities and complies with all City policies and procedures
