Job Description

The City of California is seeking dedicated and motivated individuals to join its police force as a Police Trainee. This entry-level position is designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement and are eager to develop the skills necessary to serve and protect their community. The City’s police department is committed to maintaining law and order through community-based policing activities that emphasize safety, crime prevention, and effective communication with the public.

This position is classified as an At-Will, non-sworn trainee role that requires attendance and successful completion of the State of California POST Basic Police Academy. The Police Trainee will work under direct supervision and will learn a broad range of law enforcement techniques and procedures. As a trainee, the individual will participate in community engagement initiatives, assist with patrol duties, and undertake various non-sworn police tasks in support of departmental goals.

This role offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience while preparing for future promotion to a fully sworn Police Officer. Trainees do not have police powers during the academy training but are expected to uphold all rules and regulations of both the academy and the police department. Those not attending the academy on any given day may be assigned duties such as traffic direction, records management, or other administrative tasks that contribute to the police department’s operations.

The ideal candidate will be committed to learning, physically fit, and capable of adapting to challenging situations. Completion of the POST Basic Police Academy is mandatory, and successful trainees will be considered for promotion upon academy graduation and final approval by the Chief of Police. Upon promotion, employees will be subject to a one-year probationary period as fully sworn Police Officers, marking the beginning of their official law enforcement careers in the City.

This position requires the ability to absorb complex legal knowledge, including laws of arrest, search and seizure, as well as local, state, and federal regulations. Trainees will be trained in patrol procedures, crime prevention strategies, investigative techniques, and emergency response, including first aid and CPR. The role demands strong observational and communication skills, the ability to recall critical details, and the capacity to work independently and as part of a team with community members and other agencies.

Physical fitness and the ability to safely perform a range of demanding tasks are critical. Trainees will become proficient in the use of firearms, law enforcement equipment, and police vehicles. They must be prepared to handle various physical challenges such as lifting and carrying objects or individuals, climbing, balancing, and responding swiftly in emergencies.

Working conditions include exposure to a wide variety of environments, from indoor office settings to outdoor scenarios involving diverse and sometimes hazardous situations. Candidates must be prepared to adapt to loud noises, extreme weather, mechanical and chemical hazards, and potentially infectious materials. The role involves regular interaction with the public and may require managing difficult or distressed individuals.

Joining the City’s police department as a Police Trainee means embarking on a rewarding career path with significant opportunities for growth and community impact. The department values professionalism, integrity, and a dedication to public service, providing comprehensive training and support to ensure the success of every trainee transitioning into a sworn Police Officer role.
