Job Description

Houston Methodist Hospital is a premier, full-service acute-care hospital located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Renowned as the No. 1 hospital in Texas according to U.S. News & World Report and recognized as one of America’s "Best Hospitals," Houston Methodist serves as the flagship hospital of the Houston Methodist health system. It has become one of the largest nonprofit teaching hospitals in the nation, known for providing high-quality patient care, pioneering innovative medical research, and hosting comprehensive residency programs. The hospital's dedication to excellence is reinforced through strong academic affiliations with top institutions such as Weill Cornell Medicine, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Texas A&M University, and the University of Houston, helping to shape the future of healthcare through education and research.

The Point of Entry Nurse (POE Nurse) is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) who plays a vital role in managing the operational and functional aspects of patient admissions at Houston Methodist. This role requires collaboration and communication with various clinical staff and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure patients are placed in the most appropriate clinical setting within the hospital, based on medical necessity, diagnosis, and available resources. The POE Nurse coordinates patient flow and bed utilization, prioritizing both patient care needs and hospital resource optimization for cost-effective admissions.

As a POE Nurse, the incumbent supports the Emergency Department, physicians, case managers, and other healthcare professionals by facilitating timely and accurate patient placement. This requires assessing patient acuity, reviewing orders, and navigating the complexities of bed availability and staff resources to ensure smooth transitions for admitted patients. The nurse also handles clinical and social considerations, effectively managing conflicts and challenges arising in patient placement to enhance overall operational efficiency.

The role emphasizes a compassionate, integrated, multi-disciplinary case approach, fostering cooperation among healthcare providers to deliver high-quality clinical care. To excel in this role, candidates must exhibit strong critical thinking, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in technology, especially the Microsoft Office Suite and electronic medical records, is essential. Additionally, the nurse must understand pre-acute and post-acute care venues along with community resources to assist in patient care coordination.

This position is non-exempt and requires a minimum of two years of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care hospital setting, with bed placement experience strongly preferred. Holding a Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory. Licensed RNs must have or obtain permanent Texas licensure within 60 days if establishing residency.

Reporting to the hospital’s operational management, the POE Nurse contributes to quality improvement activities, including data collection on patient throughput and recommending enhancements to admission and placement processes. The nurse ensures compliance with federal, state, and Houston Methodist policies and regulations, including EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) guidelines.

In summary, the Point of Entry Nurse at Houston Methodist Hospital is a critical team member charged with optimizing patient admissions, enhancing bed utilization, and supporting clinical teams to guarantee high standards of patient care. This role offers healthcare professionals an opportunity to work in a dynamic, highly respected institution dedicated to medical excellence and patient-centered service.
