Job Description

Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group is a vital component of Houston Methodist, one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers known for its commitment to excellence in patient care, medical education, and groundbreaking research. Established as a nonprofit corporation certified by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, the Specialty Physician Group empowers physicians to maintain clinical autonomy while fostering the growth of their practices within a collaborative academic environment. Houston Methodist's mission centers on delivering world-class healthcare through innovation, compassion, and patient-centered strategies, addressing diverse patient needs across inpatient and outpatient settings throughout the Houston metropolitan area. As an equal opportunity employer, Houston Methodist values diversity and inclusion and promotes a supportive atmosphere where healthcare professionals can thrive.

The Physician Assistant (PA) with Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification plays an essential role within the Houston Methodist healthcare team. Operating as an advanced practice practitioner under the supervision of licensed physicians, the PA provides comprehensive diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical, and preventative care across a range of clinical settings. This role entails examining, diagnosing, and determining treatment plans for patients by interpreting x-rays and laboratory results, prescribing medications, obtaining patient histories, assisting in surgeries, and ordering various therapies as necessary. The PA functions with a significant degree of autonomy under physician licensure, either independently or as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.

The position impacts direct patient care in adherence with the Board of Physician Assistant Examiners in Texas and Houston Methodist's policies and procedures. Responsibilities span inpatient and outpatient care, requiring proficiency in clinical assessments, communication, and critical thinking to deliver safe, timely, and effective interventions. The PA serves not only as a clinician but also as a leader and educator—collaborating closely with interdisciplinary teams, advocating for patients and families, mentoring physician assistant students and medical residents, and spearheading initiatives aimed at improving patient safety, quality of care, and operational efficiency.

This full-time exempt role demands strong organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks effectively and the capability to exercise clinical judgment in complex situations. Additionally, it includes responsibilities for accurate documentation, compliance with coding standards, and contribution to the facility's financial and quality goals. The PA must be capable of fostering positive relationships with patients, families, and healthcare professionals by employing therapeutic communication and upholding exemplary customer service standards. Participation in hospital projects, research, and professional development activities is highly encouraged to sustain innovation and continuous learning.

The position requires readiness to be on-call during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather events and may involve travel within and outside the Houston metropolitan area. The attire includes scrubs, business professional wear, or other department-approved clothing. Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group is committed to supporting their providers with comprehensive resources, competitive benefits, and a culture of growth and advancement tailored to the dedicated professionals who help them achieve their mission.
