Job Description
UMass Memorial Health is the premier health system in Central Massachusetts, dedicated to providing exceptional patient care, academic excellence, and leading-edge research. With over 20,000 employees, this organization operates as a unified health system focused on healing patients, supporting the community, and fostering collaboration among staff. At UMass Memorial Health, everyone is considered a caregiver, regardless of their specific role or responsibilities. This culture supports a work environment that values respect, teamwork, responsiveness, kindness, and open communication, making it a rewarding place to build a meaningful and lasting career.
The Lab Support Technician I position at UMass Memorial Health is a critical role within the phlebotomy department. This non-exempt role offers a hiring salary range of $15.75 to $28.35 per hour, with the final offer depending on the candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. The schedule typically includes working holidays every third holiday, Mondays through Fridays, and weekends every third weekend, with shifts ranging from early morning to evening hours. Scheduled work hours are 40 per week, including 6:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday, and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Lab Support Technician I will be responsible for greeting and receiving patients cordially, assessing their needs, and directing them appropriately. This position involves using computers and telephones, completing clerical duties, and performing various phlebotomy procedures including blood collections, blood cultures, EKGs, breath tests, MRSA and COVID swabbing. The technician will collect blood samples across all age groups using appropriate venipuncture techniques and follow departmental protocols strictly to ensure quality sample collection. They will receive and label specimens correctly, prioritize urgent tests such as STAT, Stroke and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples, and transport specimens promptly according to established protocols.
Maintaining an organized and clean work area is essential for the role. Lab Support Technicians will restock supplies at the end of each shift, keep patient orders accessible and well organized, and accurately register all courier-delivered specimens in the computer system while troubleshooting printer issues when necessary. The job requires computer proficiency in hospital information systems as the technician orders tests accurately using the test dictionaries and panels provided, communicating with other departments for clarification as needed.
Telephone support includes answering and transferring calls courteously to ensure continuous coverage. The technician will also perform capillary collections such as heel sticks and PKU tests with proficiency, ensuring sample quality and correct volume. Adaptability to workflow and staffing needs is vital, as the technician may provide coverage for home draws, secretarial duties, and different drawing stations. General lab responsibilities include restocking supplies, reporting inventory levels, using personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately, and maintaining procedural proficiency through annual reviews.
In emergency room support, the technician is expected to use the Responder 5 system efficiently, work independently, maintain PPE compliance and pager readiness, train nursing staff on draw procedures, stock supplies, and ensure timely patient specimen collection. The role also demands age-specific competency, applying knowledge of growth and development stages in communications and patient care, and providing support tailored to the patient's age group.
UMass Memorial Health offers a positive, inclusive work environment emphasizing respect with six core standards: acknowledge, listen, communicate, be responsive, be a team player, and be kind. The health system is an equal opportunity employer, encouraging diverse applicants and providing reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities. This is a unique opportunity for individuals seeking a career in healthcare supporting patient care through technical and clerical expertise in a supportive, collaborative organization.
