The Lab Support Technician I role at UMass Memorial Health is a vital position within the clinical laboratory team. This is a non-exempt, full-time position with a scheduled 40-hour workweek, operating primarily between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM, including holiday and weekend rotations such as every third holiday and every third weekend. The hiring salary range for this role is between $15.75 and $28.35 per hour, with final offers depending on the candidate's experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations. Additionally, a signing bonus may be available, which will be discussed during the interview process.

In this multifaceted role, the Lab Support Technician I is responsible for direct interaction with patients, including warmly greeting and receiving them, assessing their needs, and directing them appropriately. Key duties include performing phlebotomy procedures such as blood collections across all age groups, blood cultures, EKGs, breath tests, MRSA and COVID swabbing, as well as heel sticks and PKU collections. This position requires proficiency in specimen collection, labeling, prioritization, transporting specimens, and maintaining organized work areas. The technician also supports computer and telephone communications, handles test order entries into hospital information systems, and troubleshoots any related technical issues. They must exhibit knowledge of specimen registration, resource utilization, and general laboratory duties, including maintaining inventory and using personal protective equipment properly.

Job Duties

  • Collects blood samples using appropriate venipuncture techniques across all age groups
  • Follows departmental protocols for sample collection
  • Communicates difficulties or complications to supervisors and maintains professional conduct
  • Receives specimens in the computer system
  • Labels and prioritizes specimens accurately
  • Transports specimens promptly and redistributes them per protocol
  • Maintains a clean and organized drawing station or cart
  • Restocks supplies at the end of each shift
  • Keeps patient orders accessible and organized
  • Registers all courier-delivered specimens accurately and efficiently
  • Troubleshoots printer issues as needed
  • Demonstrates mastery of hospital information systems
  • Orders tests accurately using knowledge of test dictionaries and panels
  • Communicates with departments for clarification
  • Answers and transfers calls courteously and efficiently
  • Ensures coverage for incoming calls
  • Performs heel sticks and PKU collections proficiently
  • Adapts to workflow changes and staffing needs
  • Provides coverage for home draws, secretarial duties, and drawing stations
  • Offers constructive feedback to supervisors
  • Restocks supplies and reports low inventory
  • Uses PPE appropriately and provides shift reports
  • Maintains procedural proficiency through annual reviews
  • Supports emergency room operations by stocking supplies, training nursing staff, and ensuring timely patient draws
  • Applies knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate communication and support
