Arbor Hospice, affiliated with the Arbor Hospice Foundation, is a distinguished provider of compassionate end-of-life care located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are part of Hospice of Michigan, which stands as the largest non-profit hospice provider in the state. This role of Philanthropy Manager is central to Arbor Hospice and Hospice of Michigan’s fundraising and donor engagement endeavors. The Philanthropy Manager will be responsible for establishing, maintaining, and enhancing valuable community relationships, aligning those connections with the goals and philanthropic needs of the organization. This includes overseeing and coordinating a variety of development activities such as special fundraising events, third-party fundraisers, statewide project teams, and annual giving campaigns. Reporting to an assigned director, the manager will play a crucial role in both local and statewide projects aimed at increasing charitable contributions and promoting ongoing community support. The position demands a strategic and energetic individual capable of managing multi-faceted efforts including event planning, budget management, donor stewardship, and public relations.

The Philanthropy Manager will solicit, plan, implement, and evaluate large fundraising events, ensuring that these events run smoothly and deliver positive outcomes. They will actively recruit and coordinate committee members, seek corporate and individual sponsorships, and work in close collaboration with the communications team to manage event promotion and public relations. Additionally, the manager supports efforts relating to donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, maintenance, stewardship, and recognition, ensuring strong relationships and donor retention. An important part of this role includes staying informed about emerging fundraising trends and procedures in the nonprofit sector and applying that knowledge to benefit the organization’s fundraising strategies.

This position also involves financial responsibilities such as creating and managing budgets, submitting financial reports and invoices to donors in a timely manner, and ensuring all fundraising projects adhere to budgetary guidelines. Furthermore, the Philanthropy Manager actively participates in educational and professional growth activities, adapting to changing priorities while maintaining a high level of efficiency and professionalism. Frequent communication with donors, trustees, volunteers, and the public forms part of the essential functions, along with staffing committees and providing assistance to third-party event organizers.

The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and the ability to foster constructive relationships internally and externally. They must be adept at handling sensitive information with confidentiality, managing multiple tasks simultaneously under stress, and fulfilling physical demands such as occasional lifting and extensive telephone contact. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years development experience preferred
  • Special events management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with donor databases and social media

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Five years’ experience in development arena preferred
  • Strong experience in special events, communications, grants or major gifts preferred
  • Special events and project management experience required
  • Experience with donor database such as Raisers Edge
  • Experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and sound judgment
  • Effective organizational, prioritization and follow-through skills
  • Attention to detail and dependability
  • Emotional intelligence and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks efficiently
  • Ability to function under stress
  • Able to perform physical demands such as lifting up to 25 pounds
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to work variable hours including weekends
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Job Duties

  • Solicits, plans, implements and evaluates large fundraising events and third party events
  • Recognizes third party organizations and seeks other third party fundraising opportunities
  • Manages all details regarding hospice program-sponsored events including committee involvement, recruitment and staffing of members
  • Solicits and secures corporate and individual sponsorship
  • Creates budget and manages expenses
  • Manages promotion and public relations for events in coordination with communications team
  • Assists with planning, implementation, and evaluation of annual giving campaign and special projects
  • Assists in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, maintenance, stewardship and recognition
  • Keeps abreast of fundraising procedures in the nonprofit sector
  • Seeks out new funding opportunities and manages recurring fund requests
  • Assists in strategic planning to increase major-gift donors and retention rates
  • Prepares and manages annual expense and revenue budgets
  • Submits narrative reports, invoices and financial statements to donors timely
  • Participates in education, training and professional growth activities
  • Maintains frequent contact with donors, trustees and the public
  • Staffs committees and volunteers to aid fundraising efforts
  • Serves as liaison to third party events and provides assistance
  • Develops and nurtures relationships with funding partners
  • Promotes organization’s mission in community
  • Adheres to organizational policies and donor integrity standards
  • Upholds NorthStar Care Community’s care standards.
