Philadelphia Elementary Reading Tutor - Full Time

Reading Assist is a dedicated educational organization committed to improving literacy outcomes for children in Philadelphia's highest-need elementary schools. As an AmeriCorps program, Reading Assist provides individuals with the unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact by serving as Reading Assist Fellows throughout the school year. Fellows work directly with struggling readers in kindergarten through fifth grade, delivering targeted instructional support to help these children build foundational reading skills. The organization operates within various Philadelphia public schools, partnering with educators, school administrators, and community members to foster a supportive learning environment where every child has a chance to succeed. \n\nThe Reading Assist Fellowship is a comprehensive, year-long commitment from August 24, 2026, to June 30, 2027, during which fellows complete 1200 service hours working Monday through Friday, approximately from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Following an intensive four-week graduate-level in-person training, fellows are embedded into partner schools and assigned to work with small groups of students or provide one-on-one reading instruction. During daily sessions of 30 to 45 minutes, fellows focus on improving the reading ability of students who face considerable challenges in traditional classroom settings. This hands-on role requires patience, adaptability, and dedication as fellows often support students who may also have behavioral difficulties alongside academic needs.\n\nIn addition to teaching, Reading Assist Fellows participate fully in the AmeriCorps community by engaging in ongoing training, events, and service projects. Fellows collaborate closely with Program Managers who provide coaching, feedback, and resources to maximize instructional effectiveness. Regular meetings with Program Managers ensure that interventions are tailored to individual student needs and student progress is continuously monitored. Fellows are responsible for preparing lesson plans, maintaining accurate records of attendance and service hours, and communicating professionally with school liaisons and Reading Assist staff. The program emphasizes both personal and professional growth, offering fellows the opportunity to enhance their instructional skills, contribute to their communities, and develop a deeper understanding of educational inequities.\n\nReading Assist seeks individuals passionate about literacy, education, and community service who are eager to commit a full academic year to making a positive difference.
