Job Description
Walgreens is a leading retail pharmacy chain in the United States known for its commitment to community health and wellness. Established over a century ago, Walgreens has grown into a household name, offering a broad range of health services and products to millions of customers nationwide. As a large-scale pharmacy and wellness company, Walgreens focuses on providing accessible, affordable, and high-quality pharmaceutical services alongside health and wellness products. With thousands of stores across the country, Walgreens is dedicated to enhancing community health through innovative programs and advanced technology. The company places strong emphasis on customer care, employee development, and compliance with healthcare regulations, making it not only a convenient place for consumers to access pharmacy services but also a dynamic workplace for healthcare professionals.
The role of a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice represents a progressive shift from traditional, transaction-based pharmacy jobs to a more patient-centered approach. This transformation underscores Walgreens' focus on building meaningful relationships between pharmacy staff and customers, ensuring that patients receive personalized care and advice. Pharmacy technicians at Walgreens are integral to the pharmacy team, working directly under pharmacists' supervision to support prescription processing, medication management, and customer service. The position requires using the latest pharmacy technology and systems, reflecting Walgreens' investment in providing technicians with the tools necessary to advance their careers and deliver superior patient care.
Walgreens proudly offers an "earn while you learn" Pharmacy Technician Training Program that is recognized by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Department of Labor. This apprenticeship program is designed to provide an accessible entry point into healthcare careers while guiding participants towards becoming a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician. This certification is a nationally recognized and portable credential, equipping technicians with the professional skills and credentials necessary to succeed and grow within the pharmacy care industry.
The training encompasses foundational knowledge as well as advanced pharmacy concepts delivered through coursework, hands-on experiences, learning activities, and professional development resources. Whether a candidate is new to pharmacy work or has previous experience, Walgreens offers training to sharpen skills and enable technicians to serve customers and patients effectively. The role also involves patient engagement by greeting customers, offering assistance, and resolving issues to ensure a positive pharmacy experience. Pharmacy technicians contribute to medication safety by correctly entering patient and drug information, assisting in prescription filling, managing inventory, and supporting clinical services under pharmacist supervision.
In addition to operational responsibilities, Walgreens Pharmacy Technicians engage in continuous professional development, maintain certification requirements, and comply with company policies and healthcare regulations. This position is ideal for those who value patient interaction, have a detail-oriented mindset, and seek career growth within the healthcare sector. Walgreens supports its pharmacy teams through ongoing education, performance feedback, and opportunities to participate in community health outreach and collaboration with local medical providers. The role typically compensates between $17 and $20.5 per hour, with work schedules that may include evenings and weekends, reflecting the demands of retail pharmacy hours.
