Job Description
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is Oregon's only public academic health center and serves as a vital system of hospitals and clinics throughout Oregon and southwest Washington. OHSU is a prestigious institution of higher learning with schools dedicated to medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and public health, boasting a robust network of campuses and partners throughout the region. Renowned as a national research hub, OHSU employs thousands of scientists dedicated to developing life-saving therapies and furthering medical understanding. As the largest employer in Portland and a key economic driver statewide, OHSU plays a critical role in providing healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations in Oregon, along with extensive community outreach programs aimed at improving health outcomes across the state.
The position available within OHSU is that of a Pharmacy Clerk, a fundamental role that involves customer interaction and handling monetary transactions within the pharmacy setting. The Pharmacy Clerk acts as the first point of contact by greeting customers and assisting them in locating their prescriptions for purchase. This position requires the operation of a cash register to process payments, including cash, credit cards, or other forms of payment, ensuring accuracy in totaling purchases and providing correct change. Compliance with OHSU and Pharmacy Department policies, as well as Board of Pharmacy regulations related to cash handling, is essential. The role also encompasses balancing cash and other revenues and preparing accurate end-of-day reports to ensure the pharmacy's financial integrity. In addition to transactional duties, the Pharmacy Clerk may handle telephone inquiries from the public, provide general information and directions, and routinely contact customers to remind them of prescription pick-ups. Assisting in inventory activities and performing other routine tasks not involving direct medication handling are also part of the role.
This position demands strong multitasking capabilities and the ability to prioritize competing demands from customers in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The Pharmacy Clerk must maintain exceptional customer service standards at all times despite frequent interruptions and workplace stressors common to healthcare settings. This job requires excellent interpersonal communication skills and a systematic approach to problem-solving, with the capacity to work independently under minimal supervision. OHSU values diversity and inclusivity and welcomes individuals from a variety of backgrounds to contribute to its mission. The role signifies an important opportunity to be part of Oregon's premier public academic health organization with access to comprehensive benefits and career growth potential.
