This Personal Care Attendant (PCA) role is designed to assist clients and their families with a variety of non-medical personal care and homemaking tasks. The PCA supports clients by helping with dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, mobility, meal preparation, housekeeping, and transportation. This role requires an individual who is empathetic, reliable, and able to work independently and cooperatively within a supportive healthcare team. PCAs work closely with clients to maintain their independence and dignity while promoting a safe and healthy living environment. The position includes regular interaction with clients’ family members and healthcare supervisors, ensuring that care plans are executed effectively and that any changes in client conditions are promptly communicated.
In addition to personal care duties, the PCA assists with light housekeeping and meal planning to contribute to the overall well-being of clients. The role demands flexibility to work in community-based settings, clients’ homes, and sometimes outdoors, potentially during non-business hours. Physical stamina is essential as the job involves lifting, transferring clients using assistive devices, and navigating stairs. Adherence to safety, privacy, and confidentiality standards is critical, along with compliance with public health and organizational policies. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of University of Vermont Health Network PCA Training program
- Successful completion of PCA coursework and exam
- Ability to communicate in English
- Maintain standing with Adult Abuse Registry, Child Abuse and Neglect Registry, Vermont Criminal Information Center and OIG
- Free from illegal drug and alcohol use in the workplace
- Valid driver’s license with reliable, insured vehicle
- Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Willingness to work flexible hours including non-business hours
- Ability to work in various environments including outdoors and client homes
- Demonstrate commitment to organizational policies and patient confidentiality
- Ability to handle stressful situations with professionalism
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of University of Vermont Health Network PCA Training program
- Successful completion of PCA coursework and exam
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
- Demonstrated good judgment, initiative, and a positive attitude
- Experience working cooperatively with clients and healthcare teams
- Knowledge of advanced communication techniques for clients with mental illness or dementia
- Understanding of spinal cord and neurological condition care
- Ability to maintain client confidentiality and privacy
Job Duties
- Assist clients with dressing, bathing, grooming, toileting, and personal hygiene
- Perform light housekeeping tasks such as dishwashing, laundry, and straightening
- Plan and prepare basic meals and assist with grocery shopping
- Provide mobility support including assistance with devices and transfers
- Observe and report changes in client condition
- Maintain accurate records of services provided
- Transport clients to appointments and errands
- Practice standard precautions and follow safety protocols
- Participate in training and team meetings
- Support independence and safety of clients
