The Perfusionist role at Stanford Health Care is a vital clinical position within the cardiothoracic surgery team. Perfusionists are highly skilled professionals responsible for managing extracorporeal circulation equipment such as heart-lung machines, which temporarily take over the circulatory and respiratory functions of patients during complex surgical interventions. These specialists operate sophisticated equipment including roller and centrifugal blood pumps, oxygenators, temperature regulation devices, ventricular assist devices, and blood gas analyzers to maintain patient stability and safety throughout procedures. Beyond technical expertise, Perfusionists often collaborate closely with surgeons and anesthesiologists, making critical clinical decisions, administering medications via the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, monitoring physiological parameters, and managing blood products.
