The role of Perfusionist at St. Louis University Hospital is vital to supporting complex cardiac and pulmonary surgical procedures. This position involves operating extra-corporeal circulation equipment during surgeries that require artificial support or temporary replacement of circulatory or respiratory functions. As a key member of the surgical team, the Perfusionist works closely with physicians, residents, and multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure effective and safe management of patients undergoing critical interventions.

The Perfusionist is responsible for the preparation and monitoring of patients before, during, and after procedures by performing patient assessments and adjusting equipment parameters to maintain proper anticoagulation, electrolyte, acid-base, and blood-gas balance. They set up and manage extracorporeal devices used for cardiac or pulmonary support, administer pharmacological agents and blood products as necessary, and operate intra-aortic balloon pump therapy as well as autologous blood processing devices.

This role requires constant alertness and adherence to safety protocols, as well as meticulous documentation of all assessments, procedures, and activities. Additionally, the Perfusionist ensures that all perfusion equipment, packs, and supplies are readily available and properly maintained for both scheduled and emergency surgeries. The hospital offers a flexible work schedule with hours that will be determined during the interview process, supporting work-life balance for its employees.

Employment type is regular employee status, working approximately 25 hours weekly with day shift hours predominately. Job Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited perfusion program
  • Missouri perfusionist license required at time of hire
  • At least 1 year of perfusion experience preferred
  • Prior academic medical center experience strongly preferred
  • Constant standing and walking
  • Frequent lifting, carrying and pushing, pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs
  • Frequent reaching, gripping and keyboard use, data entry
  • Frequent use of vision for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more)
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication
  • Occasional bending, stooping, climbing, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, twisting and repetitive foot, leg and hand, arm movements
  • Occasional lifting, carrying and pushing, pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships and to identify and distinguish colors
  • Rare use of smell to detect, recognize odors
  • Rare driving
  • State-required professional licenses and certifications for Missouri including BLS HCP, CCP, and Missouri Division of Professional Registration perfusionist license

Job Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited perfusion program
  • Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) - American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Missouri Perfusionist license required at time of hire
  • Prior academic medical center experience strongly preferred

Job Duties

  • Prepares for procedures by performing patient assessment
  • Performs perfusion and other procedures including monitoring anticoagulation, electrolyte, acid-base and blood-gas status throughout procedures and taking appropriate actions to resolve imbalances
  • Sets up and operates extracorporeal devices used for temporary replacement or support of cardiac or pulmonary function
  • Administers pharmacological agents, anesthetic agents, and blood products as necessary during operation of extracorporeal devices
  • Sets up and initiates operation of intra-aortic balloon pump therapy
  • Sets up and operates autologous blood processing devices
  • Assures that perfusion packs, equipment, and supplies are available for scheduled and emergency surgeries
  • Performs assembly, maintenance, cleaning and calibration of equipment and maintains adequate supplies
  • Provides proper documentation of assessments, activities, and procedures
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner
  • Performs other duties as assigned
