Job Description
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), located in Richmond, Virginia, stands as one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. With a vast encyclopedic collection that includes more than 50,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years of world history, VMFA offers an unparalleled experience to visitors interested in diverse artistic expressions. Our collections include the largest public display of Fabergé pieces outside Russia, one of the finest Art Nouveau collections outside Paris, and a distinguished collection of American art, alongside important works in Chinese art, English silver, French Impressionism and Postimpressionism, British sporting art, modern and contemporary art, as well as South Asian, Himalayan, and African art. As a state-supported, privately endowed educational institution, VMFA operates year-round with free general admission, enriching the cultural life and education of the Virginia community and beyond.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is currently seeking a Performing Arts Coordinator to join its Education Programming department. This is a faculty-level, salaried position offering an annual salary in the range of $50,000 to $53,000, exempt from the Virginia Personnel Act. The primary responsibility of this role is to manage the operations, budgets, contracts, and logistics of VMFA's performing arts programming. This program includes popular recurring events such as First Friday music, Dance After Work, and the Dominion Energy Jazz Café. The Performing Arts Coordinator ensures the smooth execution of events from planning to breakdown, working closely with artists, vendors, and various internal teams.
This role demands a highly motivated, detail-oriented individual with exceptional communication and organizational skills. The coordinator will plan and implement an annual roster of performing arts events aligned with VMFA’s mission and special exhibitions. Coordination involves supervising staff or volunteers, handling contracts, managing budgets in accordance with Commonwealth procurement standards, assisting with education programs, and serving as the main liaison between the museum and performing arts community partners. The position requires proficiency in administrative tasks including record keeping, reporting, and program evaluations, as well as marketing collaboration with VMFA’s marketing and public relations team.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced and often changing environment, demonstrating the ability to independently manage multiple tasks and make sound decisions. They will bring a passionate understanding of performing arts trends and a strong connection to Metro Richmond’s arts audience. This is a unique opportunity to be at the heart of a dynamic cultural institution, promoting performance arts as an essential part of public engagement and education. The position also requires flexibility to work weekly evenings and some weekends, particularly for Dominion Energy Jazz Café events every Wednesday evening and First and Third Fridays of the month, among other occasions. Join the VMFA team to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Richmond, Virginia, while advancing your career in museum arts administration and program management.
