Job Description

JASA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults and their families. Based in New York, JASA provides a wide range of community-based social services, including health and wellness programs, affordable housing, and employment services for seniors. The organization is committed to helping seniors maintain their independence and live with dignity, offering vital programs that promote wellness, safety, and social connectedness. With a focus on compassionate care and support, JASA stands as a trusted community partner serving the needs of older adults across the city and surrounding areas.

The current opportunity available at JASA is for a Vehicle Operator position, designed primarily to assist in transporting elderly and infirm clients in a safe, clean, and reliable manner. This role is part-time with work hours Monday through Friday, from 7 AM to 3 PM, averaging between 7 to 14 hours weekly. The Vehicle Operator ensures that assigned vehicles are well-maintained, clean, and ready for use each day. This includes responsibilities such as regular vehicle maintenance checks, purchasing gas and oil as needed, and equipping the vehicle with essential emergency tools, including spare tires and jacks.

In addition to vehicle upkeep, the Vehicle Operator holds a critical role in client assistance. This person escorts clients safely from their homes to the vehicle and back, providing physical and emotional support when necessary. The operator also has a duty to notice any unusual or concerning situations with clients during pickups and immediately report these to a coordinator, which ensures client safety and well-being at all times. Handling client contributions and issuing receipts with accountability to supervisors is another important task. This position requires compliance with all traffic laws and safe driving practices to prevent accidents and violations.

Beyond driving and client assistance, the Vehicle Operator contributes to meal service operations by helping package meals, cleaning thermal containers and bags, and maintaining the food preparation area. This multitasking aspect of the role aids in smooth program delivery and client satisfaction.

This job is ideal for individuals with at least one year of driving experience who hold a valid New York State Driver's License—Class A, B, or CDL—and maintain a clean driving record. The role requires physical ability, including lifting over 50 pounds, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods, along with strong communication skills in English. Above all, the ability to relate compassionately to older adults and their unique needs is a fundamental aspect of success in this position.
