The role of Shift Leader at Pei Wei is pivotal to the operational success of each restaurant. Shift Leaders act as direct support to the Management team and have significant responsibilities that impact the daily operations of the restaurant. They are expected to be proficient in culinary and front-of-house operations, capable of performing tasks themselves, and coaching other team members to maintain high standards. The position demands leadership acumen, as Shift Leaders take charge during management absences and ensure smooth restaurant functioning across all shifts.
In this role, the Shift Leader is responsible for enforcing company policies relating to food safety, health standards, and operational procedures, which requires certification as a food handler and expertise in training team members accordingly. They communicate effectively across the team and management through various channels, including in-person conversations and emails, encouraging a positive and productive work environment. Acting as a role model, Shift Leaders set the tone in dress, behavior, guest interactions, and standard adherence.
Shift Leaders also lead through delegation and verification of duties, manage administrative responsibilities like scheduling, reporting, inventory, cash handling, and opening/closing tasks. They participate actively in onboarding and training new employees to ensure all team members understand their roles and responsibilities. Solid guest relations skills are essential, as Shift Leaders coach the team to enhance the overall guest experience and promptly address any issues that arise.
Candidates for this role should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment with a strong focus on customer satisfaction and operational excellence. The role requires physical stamina to stand and walk for long periods, as well as the ability to move and transport objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Excellent hearing and vision – with correction if necessary – are required to perform functions accurately.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- 6 months shift lead experience for external candidates
- 4 months Pei Wei experience for internal candidates
- Ability to stand and walk for 4 to 10 hours per shift
- Ability to reach, bend, balance, and transport objects up to 30 lbs repeatedly
- Ability to hear with 100 percent accuracy with correction
- Ability to see at 20/20 vision with correction
- Certified food handler

Job Duties
- Certified/trained in culinary and front-of-the-house operations and can perform duties and coach/verify on a daily basis
- Certified food handler and can effectively teach and execute company safety and health procedures
- Effectively communicates through live conversations, email, etc. to team members, management, and RSO
- Acts as a role model in behaviors, dress, and guest interaction
- Effectively leads the team during the shift, through coaching, delegation, and verification
- Effectively follows/executes shift responsibilities as outlined on mod checklist including admin, reporting, scheduling, SMG scores, cash handling, opening/closing duties, inventory/ordering
- Effectively supports the onboarding/training process including scheduling
- Effectively performs cash handling procedures according to company policies
- Effectively handles guest relations and can coach team on behaviors to improve the guest experience
- Promptly escalates any employee relations concerns to the GM
- Attends all store manager meetings
- Effectively executes other tasks/duties as assigned
