The position of Per Diem Food Service Worker is available at Jersey City Medical Center, one of the facilities under RWJBarnabas Health. Located at 355 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ, this role is integral to the Dietary-Management department. The role operates on a per diem basis with a day shift schedule, and the hourly pay rate is $19.89. This position involves a range of routine tasks within food service areas, focused on preparing equipment and foods according to standard practices and regulatory requirements. Reporting to a Department of Food and Nutrition Services Supervisor or Manager, the Food Service Worker is responsible for ensuring food service operations run smoothly and that customer satisfaction is consistently met.
The Food Service Worker assists in meal service across the cafeteria and patient care units, including hot and cold food portioning and tray setup. The role also involves collecting and processing trash, cleaning work areas and equipment, and delivering meals to patient units while assisting patients as needed. Additionally, this position handles tasks such as operating the cash register, performing reconciliations, and maintaining cleanliness and order in dining and food preparation areas. The worker is expected to comply with established policies, follow oral and written instructions accurately, and participate actively in departmental cleaning schedules. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Knowledge of food production, service and sanitation required
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established policies
- Successful completion of site personnel general orientation
- Successful completion of department-specific orientation
- Ability to work day shift
- Ability to work per diem and every other weekend as needed

Job Duties
- Assist in serving meals in the cafeteria and on the units
- Assist in hot/cold food portioning
- Assist in tray set-up
- Collect, process and dispose of trash accordingly
- Perform general cleaning duties as requested
- Deliver meals to patient care units and assist patients when possible
- Clean food carriers upon return
- Prepare, stock and transport food carriers
- Keep dining room tables straightened and clean
- Operate the cash register accordingly
- Collect cash/guest meal tickets and make change as needed
- Lock register when leaving the immediate area
- Participate and maintain cleaning schedules
- Maintain cleanliness of work area, equipment and supplies
- Reconcile cash accurately and fill out a reconciliation slip
- Responsible for all reconciliations with a $3.00 overage/shortage
- Scrape, scour and rinse pots, pans, utensils and equipment
- Perform heavy cleaning duties
- Set up menu board to reflect current menu
- Wipe off counters and tables, arrange and replenish items as needed
- Refill and stock condiments as necessary
- Follow work assignments as established
- Perform all other duties as assigned
