Job Description
DCH Health System is a well-established healthcare provider dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and nutritional services. The system emphasizes patient satisfaction, quality assurance, and compliance with industry standards, including those set by The Joint Commission (TJC). As part of DCH's nutritional services team, the Patient Dining Assistant (PDA) position plays a critical role in ensuring each patient’s dietary needs are accurately met while promoting a positive, efficient, and professional dining experience within the hospital environment. This role involves direct patient interaction using advanced technology, including iPads and the My Dining meal ordering system, to serve diverse patient populations adhering to physician-prescribed diets and dietary restrictions. The PDA acts as an essential liaison between patients, nutritional services, nursing, and other departments to foster communication and excellent service delivery.
The Patient Dining Assistant is responsible for guiding patients, guests, and family members through the My Dining meal system by providing personalized instructions and capturing diet-specific food choices for each meal. This involves careful communication, patient advocacy, and thorough confirmation procedures using two patient identifiers to ensure compliance with safety protocols. Accuracy in handling diet orders and timely meal delivery are fundamental responsibilities, contributing directly to the facility’s patient satisfaction scores. The PDA must efficiently organize meal tickets, assemble trays according to confirmed orders, and facilitate the delivery and collection of patient trays while maintaining strict adherence to time constraints and quality assurance checkpoints.
A vital aspect of this role is the PDA’s ability to handle and resolve patient concerns independently, ensuring a positive dining experience for every patient daily. This requires multi-tasking, prioritization, and strong interpersonal skills to serve patients, their families, and healthcare staff with professionalism and empathy. Additionally, the PDA supports operational tasks like inventory management for nursing units, maintaining floor stock levels, and assisting in kitchen activities such as drying trays and preparing service carts. The position demands computer literacy, including proficiency with iPads, scanners, Meditech software, and Ascom communications devices.
This role requires flexibility, including willingness to work variable shifts necessary for comprehensive patient care and nutritional services. It is well-suited for self-motivated individuals who can work independently within a fast-paced hospital setting. The PDA position demands physical stamina due to continuous walking, bending, and carrying equipment, and a commitment to DCH behavioral standards emphasizing positive relationships and compliance with organizational policies. Employees are expected to complete required training such as ServSafe certification within six months of hire.
Being a Patient Dining Assistant at DCH Health System means contributing to a supportive healthcare environment where dietary health and patient satisfaction are prioritized. This full-time role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients’ hospital experiences by ensuring their nutritional needs and meal preferences are not only met but done so with care and precision. By upholding high standards in service, communication, and safety, the PDA helps maintain DCH’s reputation for excellence in patient-centered care and nutritional service delivery. The job combines technology use, patient advocacy, team collaboration, and hands-on operational support in a dynamic healthcare environment that values dedication and professional growth.
