In this role, the specialist is responsible for skillfully proofing and baking bakery items that are visually appealing and fresh. They decorate cakes, pies, and other desserts with precision and neatness, including hand writing personalized messages on cakes according to customer requests. Mastery in handling equipment such as a 20 qt mixer to prepare fillings and frostings is essential. Beyond the baking skills, the Pastry Specialist provides excellent customer service by taking orders, practicing upselling techniques, and accurately handling phone orders and messages. The specialist must be knowledgeable about all bakery items and ongoing promotions to inform and entice customers effectively.
Operational responsibilities include rotating bakery items to maintain product freshness, conducting floor checks to ensure shelves are adequately stocked and merchandised, and enforcing pricing integrity. The role also includes some inventory duties such as receiving merchandise, downloading, and auditing inventories periodically. Maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment using the "clean as you go" approach is paramount to meet health and safety standards.
The Pastry Specialist may also have a mentoring role, directly training and helping to develop other bakery employees. Teamwork and fostering a positive work environment are encouraged to ensure a harmonious workplace. The position requires physical stamina since it involves standing for extended periods, occasional lifting of heavy items up to 50 lbs, and manual dexterity for various baking activities. Job Requirements
- 18 years of age or older
- must be able to safely lift 50 lbs unassisted
- stands for extended periods of time with frequent bending and stooping required during the course of the workday
- requires manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination for various activities
- ability to read and understand recipes and measuring quantities
- must be able to work under extreme temperatures hot oven and freezers
- may require working occasional longer shifts 10 hours due to business needs
- may require working overnight, early mornings, evenings weekends and holidays
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- previous experience in baking or pastry preparation preferred
- good customer service and communication skills
- ability to operate bakery equipment safely and efficiently
- ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices
- ability to read and understand recipes accurately
- basic math skills for measuring ingredients
- ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays
