The role of Pastry Baker at TARTINE’s San Francisco commissary is integral to the bakery's daily operations and product excellence. This full-time or temporary position, offering an hourly rate of $23.00, involves a variety of baking and pastry preparation tasks that contribute to the overall quality and consistency of TARTINE’s pastry and viennoiserie menu items. Bakers are expected to be highly skilled in assembling, mixing, and finishing products while adhering strictly to recipes and quality standards established by the pastry management team. Working as part of the pastry team, the Pastry Baker will help maintain the culture and values of TARTINE by promoting a respectful, supportive, and efficient work environment.

In this fast-paced, high-volume workplace, Pastry Bakers must arrive prepared to start promptly, demonstrating excellent time management and the ability to work gracefully under pressure. They are responsible for understanding every component of the pastry and ice cream menus, ensuring that all pastries meet TARTINE's exacting standards before they reach customers. The role includes cleaning and maintaining workstations, collaborating respectfully with other team members, and actively communicating to ensure smooth handoffs between shifts. Additionally, Pastry Bakers are tasked with writing prep lists, supporting inventory management, and assisting colleagues to optimize production efficiency.

Candidates for this role should possess basic math skills, be physically capable of standing for extended periods, and able to lift and maneuver heavy trays and food items. The position requires strong oral communication skills, the ability to work well in a team environment, and proficiency in English, with some knowledge of Spanish being beneficial. Job Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Must have a high school diploma
  • Formal culinary education is preferred, but not required
  • A current California Food Handlers Certificate
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in kitchen preparation
  • Be able to communicate and understand English and a reasonable amount of Spanish
  • Effective oral communication skills and ability to work as a team player
  • Must be well groomed, maintain proper hygiene, good posture, and have required uniform and tools
  • Must display the ethical and professional standards set forth by Tartine
  • Possess excellent basic math skills
  • Be able to work in a standing position for long periods of time (minimum of 8 hours a day)
  • Able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Be able to safely lift and easily maneuver trays of food frequently weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Stamina and availability to work at least 40 hours per week, including weekends and some holidays

  • Understand the quality of product expected by TARTINE and how to edit product that is not to that standard
