Job Description
Wayne Metro Community Action Agency (Wayne Metro) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to fostering upward mobility, healthy homes, and family success in the communities it serves. With a strong legacy spanning over four decades, Wayne Metro has grown from a modest budget of $100,000 to a robust $100 million, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to impactful community service. The agency focuses on providing accessible, effective, and inclusive programs tailored to meet the unique needs of diverse populations, emphasizing diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout its operations. This dedication ensures that all individuals feel welcomed and supported as they seek services and opportunities to improve their lives.
Wayne Metro serves thousands of residents annually with measurable impact across several critical areas. In the realm of upward mobility, the agency helps over 4,000 participants enhance their financial capabilities through education, workshops, and coaching. It also facilitates free tax preparation services for more than 2,000 individuals, easing financial burdens and promoting economic stability. The family success pillar supports nearly 800 children in their readiness for kindergarten through early childhood education and empowers over 600 youth academically through targeted programs. Healthy homes initiatives have helped hundreds of households avoid homelessness and enabled more than 2,700 homes to improve energy efficiency through essential repairs. Furthermore, Wayne Metro strengthens local community organizations using initiatives like the Detroit Residents First Fund to amplify resident voices and support grassroots efforts.
Currently, Wayne Metro is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to play a vital role in uplifting children living in emergency shelters. This volunteer opportunity revolves around planning and executing a themed party for children, aimed at creating joyful and memorable experiences amid challenging circumstances. Volunteers are responsible for selecting a creative theme—ranging from space exploration to beach parties or arts extravaganzas—and then planning the decorations, activities, and party favor bags for around 20 children.
In this role, volunteers are expected to manage every aspect of the party planning process, including estimating costs and sourcing funds to purchase necessary supplies. Volunteers might raise funds themselves or use their own resources. The party setup includes decorations for the party space, materials for the activities, and the preparation of party favor bags that do not contain food or candy to ensure safety. Assembling these bags and coordinating with the agency for the pick-up of supplies requires good organizational skills and communication.
This volunteer opportunity requires a commitment of approximately three and a half hours, beginning with watching an informational video about Wayne Metro to understand the agency's mission and impact. The remaining time is dedicated to the actual planning and preparation duties to ensure the event is engaging and enjoyable for participating children. Through this role, volunteers contribute directly to nurturing a safe and fun environment for vulnerable children, supporting their emotional well-being and creating positive community connections.
Overall, volunteering with Wayne Metro offers a meaningful chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of families facing adversity, while experiencing the reward of giving back in a supportive and inclusive environment that values every volunteer's contribution.
