Job Description
The Michaels Companies Inc. is a leading North American specialty retailer that focuses on arts and crafts supplies, custom framing, home décor, and seasonal products. Since its foundation in 1973, and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels has expanded to operate over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada. Their stores primarily serve creative individuals who seek to express themselves through various forms of art and crafts. Known as the best place for all things creative, Michaels fosters a welcoming and creative environment that encourages individuals of all ages to discover and explore their artistic potential. The company’s dedication to quality products and excellent customer service is central to its reputation and continued success in the retail industry.
This role is centered in a Michaels store located in Winston-Salem, NC, where the primary responsibility is to plan, coordinate, and facilitate various events such as children’s birthday parties and craft classes. The position is designed to deliver a stress-free, fun, and engaging experience for guests, ensuring that every event runs smoothly and leaves a lasting impression. The Team Member will play a key role in providing exceptional customer service by assisting shoppers in locating products, explaining product benefits, and ensuring a fast and friendly checkout experience. Responsibilities extend beyond event coordination to include operational tasks like receiving shipments, stocking merchandise, and maintaining store standards to uphold the brand’s promises.
Event coordination duties involve meticulous planning and execution of multiple events simultaneously. The individual must be adept at engaging clients spanning a broad age range, from young children to seniors, fostering an environment that promotes creativity and enjoyment. This involves instructing participants on craft projects, performing activities such as face painting, and facilitating party add-ons in accordance with company standards. Effective communication with clients and team members, administrative tasks such as managing emails and calls, and adapting plans based on client feedback are also essential functions. The person in this role is expected to maintain cleanliness and safety before, during, and after events, reinforcing the company’s commitment to a safe and pleasant shopping atmosphere.
In addition, the position requires a strong focus on the customer experience. The Team Member will help customers shop, provide solutions, and educate them about rewards programs and credit card enrollments. The role supports company initiatives such as the Voice of Customer survey and omni-channel retail processes like Buy Online Pickup in Store and Ship From Store. Operational responsibilities include unloading trucks, stocking, planogram execution, merchandise recovery, and adherence to safety and shrink prevention programs. Cross-training in custom framing selling and production is provided to ensure versatility and better service delivery.
The ideal candidate is energetic, enthusiastic, and able to handle job stress while interacting positively with guests and coworkers. Experience in retail and customer service, especially involving children’s events, is highly desired. Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills are essential. Physical demands include standing for long periods, moving throughout the store, and performing tasks that involve bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching. The role also requires occasional lifting of heavy boxes and use of ladders to access high shelves. The work environment is a public retail setting with climate control in customer areas and some outdoor responsibilities. Work hours may include nights, weekends, and early mornings.
Michaels values inclusion and equal opportunity, providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities. The company emphasizes the wellbeing of its team members by offering comprehensive benefits, including health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), paid time off, tuition assistance, and generous employee discounts. This supportive culture encourages teamwork, creativity, and personal growth, making Michaels a great place to work for individuals passionate about arts and crafts retail and event coordination.
