Job Description
The Michaels Companies Inc. is a leading North American arts and crafts retail company, renowned for fueling the joy of creativity and celebration across its expansive network of over 1,300 stores in 49 states and Canada, along with strong online platforms at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Irving, Texas, Michaels also owns Artistree, a specialized manufacturer of custom and specialty framing merchandise. The company is deeply committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment where team members and customers alike can create, innovate, and be better together. Known for being the best place for all things creative, Michaels emphasizes high standards of customer service, community engagement, and employee wellbeing.
This particular role is based at the Michaels store located in Mobile, Alabama, and centers around event coordination and customer service excellence. The role requires planning, coordinating, and facilitating a variety of events within the store environment, with a special focus on children’s birthday parties and other creative craft classes. The ultimate goal of the position is to ensure that all guests, regardless of age, experience stress-free, fun, and engaging events that highlight creativity. Responsibilities include delivering friendly customer service, assisting customers with shopping, finding products, and providing solutions, as well as ensuring fast and efficient checkout experiences.
Alongside event coordination, the position involves operational tasks including unloading trucks, maintaining merchandise displays, and upholding store recovery standards to deliver on the brand’s promises. Candidates will be responsible for facilitating specialized activities like face painting and managing party add-ons such as goody bags and balloons, tailored to meet company specifications. Effective communication with clients and fellow store team members is essential, along with performing administrative duties like answering emails and phone calls, completing necessary paperwork, and adapting event plans according to client feedback.
The role also entails supporting key store activities to optimize inventory and support shrinkage control and safety programs. This includes participating in stock processes such as truck unloads and planogram placements, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and safety standards of the store environment. The company values team members who remain positive and respectful, even in challenging situations, and who actively contribute to fostering a positive work environment by modeling the company’s core values and vision.
Candidates for this position should be energetic, enthusiastic, and skilled in handling job stress while interacting effectively with guests of all ages and coworkers. Experience working with children and children’s events is a must, coupled with excellent communication, organizational, and creative problem-solving skills. Retail and customer service experience is also required.
Physical requirements for the job include the ability to stand for long periods, regularly bend, lift, carry, reach, and stretch, as well as handling heavy boxes and accessing elevated areas with assistance such as ladders. The work environment consists primarily of a public retail store with climate-controlled areas and involves some outdoor work and potential exposure to specialized equipment in the frame shop. Hours include nights, weekends, and early mornings, consistent with retail scheduling.
Michaels is dedicated to the full inclusion and accommodation of all qualified individuals and offers robust benefits for its team members, including health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), paid time off, tuition assistance, and discounts. The company operates under strong policies that promote equal opportunity and a safe, respectful, and engaging workplace for everyone.
