Job Description
The Michaels Companies, Inc., headquartered in Irving, Texas, is a leading specialty retailer in North America focused on arts and crafts supplies, framing, floral, and home décor. Established in 1973, Michaels operates over 1,300 stores across 49 states and Canada, alongside a robust online presence at Michaels.com and Michaels.ca. Known as the best place for all things creative, the company is dedicated to fueling the joy of creativity and celebration by providing customers with high-quality products, engaging experiences, and exceptional customer service.
This role is located at the Michaels store in Grand Rapids-Walker, MI, and is a retail position focused on event coordination and customer experience. The opportunity involves planning, coordinating, and facilitating various events including children’s birthday parties and craft classes within the store. This role supports Michaels’ Brand Promises by aiming to create a fun, stress-free, and engaging environment for guests of all ages. The position combines event management with outstanding retail customer service duties including helping customers shop, assisting at checkout, and performing operational tasks related to merchandising and store maintenance.
As an event coordinator, you will be responsible for managing multiple events simultaneously, interacting dynamically with children and adults alike to create memorable and enjoyable experiences. You will demonstrate and instruct craft projects, perform activities such as face painting, and ensure that party add-ons like goody bags and balloons meet company standards. Communication with clients and store team members is essential, as is the ability to adapt event plans to meet client needs and feedback. Part of the role involves routine administrative tasks such as answering emails, phone calls, and completing paperwork. Upholding company cleanliness and safety standards before, during, and after events is also expected.
Customer experience responsibilities include assisting customers with shopping, locating products, and providing solutions, in addition to ensuring a fast and friendly checkout experience. You will play a key role in promoting the Michaels Rewards program and Private Label Credit Card enrollments, educate customers on the Voice of Customer survey, and support omni-channel processes such as Buy Online Pickup in Store (BOPIS) and Ship From Store (SFS). Other duties include participating in merchandise stocking, planogram processes, inventory management, safety and shrink programs, and maintaining store cleanliness.
To succeed in this role, an energetic and enthusiastic personality is essential, along with excellent people skills and experience working with children and children’s events. Strong communication skills, creativity, organization, and effective problem-solving abilities will be key to managing both event coordination and retail responsibilities efficiently. Physical requirements include the ability to stand for long periods, move throughout the store, and perform tasks involving lifting, bending, reaching, and climbing ladders.
Michaels is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ensures that people with disabilities are provided with reasonable accommodations throughout the employment process. As a team member at Michaels, you can expect a supportive work environment coupled with comprehensive benefits that help you and your family thrive. These benefits include a 401(k) plan with employer match, medical, dental, and vision coverage, telemedicine, flexible spending accounts, tuition and adoption assistance, and employee discounts. Michaels values every team member and strives to foster a collaborative, respectful workplace where creativity and innovation are celebrated.
