Job Description
Indiana University (IU) Dining and Hospitality is a vibrant and integral part of Indiana University's commitment to education, innovation, and tradition. IU Dining embraces the Hoosier spirit of hospitality by providing a warm and welcoming environment where fresh, delicious, and sustainably sourced cuisine is served throughout its many dining halls, campus cafes, and eateries. The department is dedicated to supporting the IU community and guests by offering high-quality food services that emphasize customer satisfaction and operational excellence. With a strong focus on sustainability, IU Dining ensures that the food served aligns with environmental values, promoting a healthier dining experience for all patrons.
The organization fosters an inclusive workplace culture that values teamwork, growth, and community engagement. IU Dining offers opportunities for students and staff alike to gain valuable work experience, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the university’s overall mission. It operates under a commitment to safety, quality, and service, maintaining rigorous standards that uphold the university’s reputation.
The Part-Time Shift Supervisor role at Indiana University Dining and Hospitality is designed for individuals eager to develop supervisory experience while being involved in the day-to-day operations of a Campus Café, Campus Store, or Dining Hall. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to engage with a diverse team of part-time IU Dining staff, overseeing shifts that include food preparation, product stocking, register operation using Micros systems, sanitation maintenance, and facility appearance.
Part-Time Shift Supervisors work closely with the dining unit management team and certified sous chefs or designated culinary leaders to ensure smooth operation during their shifts. Responsibilities include assisting with labor distribution, training staff, monitoring service quality, and opening or closing the facility as needed. Supervisors promote staff development by coaching entry-level employees and ensuring compliance with sanitation and customer service standards.
This position requires excellent communication skills, the ability to enforce departmental procedures, and a hands-on approach to supporting the team, especially during high-volume service periods or staffing shortages. Handling cash and point of sale (POS) reconciliation, security procedures, inventory counting, and resolving customer complaints are also critical components of the role.
The position offers a flexible work schedule with up to 29 hours per week and an hourly wage of $13.75. It is a part-time, nonexempt role ideal for students or individuals seeking to supplement their income while gaining valuable experience in food service management within a respected university setting.
Indiana University emphasizes equality and diversity, providing equal employment opportunities and accommodating candidates with disabilities. Eligible federal work-study students are encouraged to apply, supporting IU’s commitment to providing meaningful employment opportunities to its student population.
Working conditions for this role involve both sedentary periods and active movement around the workspace. The role requires operating commercial kitchen equipment, handling supplies weighing 20-50 pounds, and working within a fast-paced food service environment. The ability to adapt to varying temperatures and noise levels within the kitchen and dining facilities is essential. Candidates must be prepared to work indoors and adhere to safety standards related to food handling, including the management of allergens.
Overall, the Part-Time Shift Supervisor position with IU Dining and Hospitality is a rewarding opportunity for motivated individuals who thrive in a collaborative environment and are passionate about delivering exceptional customer service and quality food experiences.
