Job Description
Indiana University (IU) Dining and Hospitality proudly embraces and amplifies the core values of Indiana University, centering on education, innovation, and tradition. These foundational principles exemplify the true spirit of Hoosier hospitality, reflecting IU’s ongoing commitment to excellence and community engagement. As a dynamic department within the university, IU Dining is dedicated to serving its diverse community by providing fresh, delicious, and sustainably sourced cuisine across its various welcoming dining halls and eateries scattered throughout the campus. The organization not only supports the nutritional and culinary needs of the IU community but also fosters an environment where guests can enjoy a satisfying meal experience in vibrant and friendly settings.
IU Dining and Hospitality is currently seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join their team as Part-Time Shift Supervisors. These supervisory roles offer an exceptional opportunity for candidates interested in gaining valuable management experience within a supportive and educational workplace. Operating under the IU Dining and Hospitality umbrella, the Shift Supervisor role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth operation and success of shifts at Campus Cafés, Campus Stores, or Dining Halls on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus.
As a Part-Time Shift Supervisor, the individual will work alongside a team of part-time dining staff to manage various responsibilities critical to daily operations. The position entails overseeing food preparation activities alongside monitoring stock levels and ensuring that products are readily available for service. The role also involves handling and operating Micros registers, a fundamental tool for processing customer orders and payments, which requires accuracy and customer service skills. Maintaining high standards of sanitation and facility appearance is central to this position, safeguarding the safety and satisfaction of all customers and staff. The Shift Supervisor supports the dining unit management team and culinary leaders, functioning under their direct guidance and occasionally representing the management team in their absence. Functions include training, labor distribution, opening and closing the dining venues, inventory management, and responding swiftly to customer concerns to uphold positive relations.
This position is well suited to individuals who are organized, able to multitask efficiently, and who thrive in a fast-paced food service environment. The role offers flexible scheduling with up to 29 hours per week, making it an excellent opportunity for students or those seeking part-time employment with Indiana University. The hourly wage is advertised at $13.75, reflecting the university’s commitment to fair compensation within the hospitality and dining sector. Candidates are encouraged to be proactive in their professional development, as the role includes fostering growth and development among part-time staff, further enriching their leadership skill set.
Working conditions for this role encompass a mix of physical and sedentary activities, including duties that require the use of commercial kitchen equipment, movement across the workspace, and handling supplies that may weigh between 20 to 50 pounds. The environment involves exposure to varying temperatures as well as loud noises typical of busy food service settings. Candidates must also be prepared to handle a variety of food items, including those that contain allergens. This role demands good vision capabilities such as depth perception and color discernment essential for food preparation and safety.
Indiana University also supports employees through a comprehensive benefits package for full-time staff, covering medical and dental insurance, health savings accounts, flexible spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care, life insurance, retirement plans, paid holidays, and generous paid time off among other benefits. While this role is part-time and may not include the entirety of these benefits, it offers foundational opportunities within a reputable university setting that values diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunities. Student candidates who qualify for Federal Work-Study are particularly encouraged to apply, enhancing their educational and financial pathways concurrently. IU also prioritizes campus safety and security, providing transparency in safety policies and timely communication with its community.
In summary, the Part-Time Shift Supervisor role at Indiana University Dining and Hospitality provides a unique chance to develop supervisory skills within a highly credible institution committed to quality, service, and community well-being. This role is ideal for motivated individuals who wish to contribute to a dynamic team while gaining meaningful workplace experience in the food service industry.
