Job Description
The City of Elkhart is a vibrant community located in the state of Indiana, known for its rich cultural heritage and commitment to providing quality services to its residents. Among its many civic amenities, the Lerner Theatre stands out as a historic and significant venue dedicated to hosting a variety of live performances and community events. The Lerner Theatre serves as a cornerstone for arts and entertainment within the city, offering a welcoming space where people gather to enjoy music, plays, and other cultural programming. As part of the city's efforts to maintain this cherished establishment, the Building Maintenance Division oversees the upkeep and cleanliness of the theatre to ensure it remains an inviting environment for patrons and performers alike.
The Lerner Services Janitor position is a part-time, hourly role paid at $16 per hour, classified as non-exempt under FLSA guidelines. This role plays a critical function in the smooth operation of the theatre by ensuring that all areas are kept clean, safe, and well-maintained. Reporting directly to the Lerner Services Coordinator, the janitor works diligently to complete a broad range of cleaning tasks and light maintenance duties critical to the upkeep of the facility. This includes daily cleaning routines such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and trash removal, as well as periodic tasks like carpet cleaning, painting, and replacement of light bulbs. The janitor’s role extends beyond routine cleaning to support show production requirements, which entails labor assistance as needed during events.
The ideal candidate for this position should have a high school diploma or GED complemented by experience in janitorial and light maintenance work. The role demands a self-motivated individual who can perform their duties with minimal supervision while adhering strictly to safety practices. Physical agility and strength are essential, as the position involves lifting, shoveling, and moving equipment and furniture of significant weight. Additionally, the janitor must be capable of reading and comprehending general maintenance manuals and be open to learning new techniques when instructed.
Working conditions include exposure to varying temperature extremes and environmental factors such as dust, snow, and hazardous chemicals, reflecting the nature of the maintenance tasks performed both indoors and outdoors throughout the year. Being part of the City of Elkhart means working in a drug-free environment, with mandatory pre-employment drug screening and the possibility of random testing during employment.
This position offers an important opportunity to contribute to the preservation and enhancement of a key cultural facility in Elkhart, ensuring a clean, safe, and pleasant atmosphere for all visitors and staff. The janitor is not only tasked with maintaining the physical environment but also plays a supportive role in the theatre's mission to provide outstanding service and memorable experiences to the community and its guests.
