Job Description

Purdue University Northwest's Dining Services is a crucial component of the university's commitment to providing quality food service and a welcoming dining experience for students, faculty, and staff. Located in Hammond, the Dining Services department operates various food service venues across the university's campus, catering to a diverse community with an emphasis on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Purdue University Northwest is well-known for its academic excellence and community engagement, and its Dining Services plays an instrumental role in supporting the daily life of the campus by ensuring that meal plans, retail food operations, and catering services meet high standards of service and cleanliness.

The university is currently seeking a Part Time Lead Cashier to join its dynamic team within Dining Services. This position is designed to provide critical front-line leadership and oversight for point-of-sale operations. The Lead Cashier will support the daily functions involved in managing cashier stations, oversee transactions, and ensure that opening and closing procedures adhere to university policies and departmental financial controls. Working approximately 19 hours per week, this role is integral in maintaining smooth operational flow during busy service periods, directly supporting student workers and food service associates.

In this role, the Lead Cashier acts as the primary resource for resolving customer concerns during shifts, handling difficult situations professionally and escalating complex issues to management when needed. An important part of the position involves monitoring compliance with food safety standards, specifically ensuring that team members hold current food handler certifications and that ServSafe guidelines are consistently met throughout service. The Lead Cashier also contributes to inventory management by assisting with restocking merchandise, tracking par levels, and submitting orders to managers. The role demands strong leadership, communication, and multitasking skills to manage break coverage, model service standards, and address performance concerns.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain supervisory experience in a high-traffic food service environment and to contribute to the positive dining experience of the Purdue University Northwest community. While benefits do not apply to this part-time position, the role does provide valuable hands-on experience in retail food service management within an academic setting. The Lead Cashier is a non-exempt position which requires the ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs occasionally and 10 to 25 lbs frequently, reflecting the physical demands of the role.

Purdue University Northwest values equal employment opportunity and ensures a non-discriminatory hiring process. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check, and professional references will be verified prior to any job offer. The university does not sponsor employment authorization for this position. This is an opportunity for individuals who thrive in a structured yet fast-paced environment and who are committed to upholding the highest standards of customer service and food safety compliance.
