This recognition underscores their standing as a leading employer within the law enforcement community, offering not only competitive compensation but an environment that values integrity, professional growth, and community service.

Operating within Newport News, the Sheriff's Office is entrusted with critical public safety responsibilities including the custody and care of inmates, the security of court facilities, and the execution of warrants and legal processes. These functions are essential to the maintenance of law and order, making the Sheriff's Office a cornerstone of the local justice system. Its workforce is composed of dedicated individuals who embody the values of respect, accountability, and ethical conduct, all of which are integral to fulfilling the agency's mission effectively.

The role of Jail Entry Receptionist is an overnight, weekend position, specifically scheduled from 7 pm to 7 am on Saturdays and Sundays. This role is pivotal as the first point of contact for visitors, legal representatives, and criminal justice officials entering the jail facility. The position demands a high level of professionalism and responsibility, as the receptionist manages a variety of tasks including overseeing the distribution and documentation of equipment such as keys and restraints, coordinating inmate visits, and maintaining detailed records of visitor and vendor interactions.

Beyond administrative duties, the Jail Entry Receptionist operates crucial communication tools such as two-way radios and manages multiple telephone lines to assist with inmate-related inquiries. This role also involves monitoring safety systems like court duress and fire alarms, which are vital for ensuring the security of the facility and its occupants. The receptionist must be proficient in the use of agency computers and various Microsoft applications to accurately document and report daily activities.

Candidates for this role are expected to demonstrate critical thinking and effective interpersonal skills as they interact with diverse individuals across the agency and the public. The ability to manage time efficiently and respond with tact and diplomacy is essential, given the sensitive nature of the jail environment. Physical capabilities including moderate exertion such as lifting and some climbing are required, along with the ability to cope with environmental exposures typical of correctional settings.

Overall, the position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking a meaningful career in law enforcement support roles within a reputable organization committed to community safety and staff well-being.
