Job Description

As an integral part of the university community, the Enterprises spans a wide range of operational fields including technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality, management, leadership, and research grants. The position of Supervisor under the direction of the Manager or Assistant Manager is central to maintaining the high standards of food service operations within Cal Poly Pomona Enterprises. Supervisors are responsible for leading teams to ensure that service is delivered efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with the organization's established standards. Supervisors serve as role models and leaders, fostering a positive and uplifting environment both for customers and employees. The scope of responsibilities includes managing staffing levels, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, maintaining sanitation and operational readiness, and upholding Foundation standards across assigned areas.

Supervisors also play a key role in inventory management by ordering, receiving, and maintaining adequate supplies of food and materials, while ensuring compliance with cash handling policies. This role involves direct interaction with customers and vendors to resolve issues promptly, contributing to overall customer satisfaction. Additionally, supervisors are tasked with staff training, coaching, and ensuring that employees adhere to scheduled work times, dress codes, and conduct policies.

Flexibility is a vital component of this role, requiring the ability to work varying schedules including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessitated by the location's business needs. The position also demands excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the capacity to interpret and apply policies effectively, and a commitment to the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Supervisors are expected to report accidents and injuries promptly and to represent the organization professionally in all interactions.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2-3 years supervisory or lead experience in a high-volume foodservice operation
  • At least 6 months of delegating tasks and/or coordinating tasks for two or more employees
  • Servsafe Managers or equivalent certification
  • Strong communication skills
  • Customer service orientation and complaint response abilities
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies
  • Resourcefulness and initiative
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment
  • Schedule flexibility including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Strong writing skills
  • Understanding of organization’s mission, vision, and values

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • A minimum of 2-3 years supervisory or lead experience in a high-volume foodservice operation
  • At least 6 months of experience delegating tasks to other employees and/or coordinating task of two or more employees
  • Servsafe Managers or equivalent certification
  • Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide good customer service and respond positively to complaints
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures to variety of situations
  • Ability to be resourceful and to take initiative
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a multi-ethnic environment
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing schedules
  • open to new ideas and adaptable to changing technology
  • Strong writing skills
  • Must understand the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and lead based on those concepts
  • Three years of successful supervisory experience in a college or university food service operations (preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts, Management, Business or related field (preferred)

Job Duties

  • Responsible for ensuring staffing levels are appropriate and prepared for service
  • Ensures compliance with established laws and regulations within their assigned area
  • Ensures continued adherence to all Foundation standards and procedures within their assigned area
  • Attends a variety of meetings as directed by the Assistant Manager
  • Orders, receives, and inventories food and supplies
  • Responsible for the effective supervision, training, and coaching of crew members
  • Ensures the readiness, organization, sanitation of area(s) assigned
  • Ensures compliance with cash register and credit card policies and procedures in all area(s) assigned
  • Resolves equipment, maintenance, and facility issues quickly and effectively
  • Ensures inventories of food and supplies are sufficient and prepared for service
  • Interacts directly with customers and vendors to resolve issues and complaints in a timely manner
  • Responsible for ensuring work schedules are communicated appropriately and time is recorded per foundations standards
  • Ensures staff report to work on time, in uniform, and ready to work
  • Required to communicate with co-workers, vendors, and other departments with professionalism and respect
  • Maintains positive behaviors and actions, provides the highest quality of service to customers at all times
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner
  • May prepare a variety of food and beverages, receive and store inventory, move and lift foodstuffs and supplies and prepare meals for customers
  • Responsible for submitting a variety of reports in an accurate, timely manner
  • Ability to adhere to a regular work schedule, to include evenings, weekends and holidays based on location/needs of business
  • Performs other duties as assigned
