Job Description

The Berkley Child and Family Development Center is part of the School of Education, Social Work and Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC). This position is a part-time role for a Food Service Worker IV at the UMKC Berkley Child and Family Development Center. The Food Service Worker IV will be responsible for preparing and cooking meals and snacks in accordance with established recipes and nutritional guidelines. The candidate will be expected to comply with the sanitary requirements mandated by The National Association for the Education of Young Children, the State Licensing Board for Child Care Centers, and the Child & Adult Care Food Program. The role involves maintaining cleanliness, safety, and sanitation within the kitchen area, adhering rigorously to all operational procedures, including the safe use and maintenance of kitchen equipment such as mixers, stoves, ovens, sanitizers, and can openers.

The ideal candidate will contribute to the ongoing improvement of the food service department, ensuring that all food supplies are properly managed, including inventory, purchasing, and stocking. This position requires interaction with children and families, making excellent customer service skills and a warm, friendly demeanor vital. The shift for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., providing a consistent schedule conducive to work-life balance. The anticipated wage for this role is $19.00 per hour, attracting candidates who are experienced in food service within institutional or commercial settings and who possess skills in food preparation, sanitation, and safety. Job Requirements

  • Completion of eighth grade or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic math
  • Two years of experience in food preparation and service in institutional or commercial food service
  • Knowledge and demonstration of food preparation, including knife skills, equipment, service and sanitation methods
  • ServSafe certification desirable or ability to obtain within six months
  • Ability to handle and lift heavy kitchen utensils and supplies (e.g., 40 pounds)

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Help the department continually improve and reach its vision
  • Perform duties related to inventory, supply purchasing, stocking and restocking and other similar tasks
  • Prepare lunch and snacks in accordance to set guidelines provided by the Child and Adult Care Food Program
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, safe and secure work area
  • Follow established cleaning procedures and schedules
  • After thorough training, properly operate designated equipment such as a mixer, stove, oven, sanitizer, and can opener
  • Ensure the setup, service, preparation, operation and cleanup of the dishwashing/pot and pan washing areas as needed
  • Provide and ensure that others provide high-quality service to children and families
  • Assist in meeting the department’s customer service objectives
