Job Description

JASA is one of New York City’s largest and most trusted nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving older adults across the community. Established with a mission to enhance the health, well-being, and independence of seniors, JASA offers a wide range of supportive services, programs, and resources tailored to the unique needs of this population. The organization is deeply committed to promoting dignity, safety, and quality of life through compassionate care and community engagement. Its extensive programs include meal services, healthcare support, social activities, and emergency response efforts, all designed to empower older adults to live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Employees at JASA are part of a mission-driven team that values teamwork, accountability, respect, and compassion, creating a supportive and inclusive work environment.

The role of a Food Service Technician at JASA is vital in supporting the organization’s nutritional programs aimed at older adults. This position involves assisting in the preparation, packaging, and serving of nutritious meals that meet health and safety standards while creating a welcoming, clean, and safe environment for participants. The Food Service Technician works Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a 30-hour workweek, offering consistent, structured hours ideal for individuals seeking part-time weekday employment. The technician’s responsibilities include meal preparation, food storage and inventory management, cleaning, and supporting program and emergency operations when necessary.

In this role, you will be part of a team that directly impacts the health and independence of older adults by ensuring they receive essential meals in a dignified and respectful manner. The position requires a hands-on approach to food handling and sanitation, operation of mechanical kitchen equipment such as meat slicers, and maintaining cleanliness throughout the kitchen, dining, and bathroom areas especially when maintenance staff are unavailable. Additionally, Food Service Technicians help support volunteers and assist with emergency response activities like Cooling Center Hours and Make-Up Days as required by city funders.

Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, basic computer literacy, and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions in English. Physical capability to lift heavy objects, climb stairs, and stand for extended periods is essential, along with the ability to safely operate kitchen equipment. New hires must obtain a Food Handler’s License within their first six months if not already certified. There is also an expectation of flexibility to work extended hours or weekends during emergency response periods or special programs.

Working at JASA provides numerous benefits beyond the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the community. The organization offers comprehensive health and wellness benefits, including medical, dental, and vision plans, employee wellness programs, and mental health support through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Retirement savings options include both a 403(b) plan and a pension plan for long-term financial security. Employees enjoy generous paid time off encompassing vacation, holidays, and floating holidays, as well as access to professional development opportunities for continuous learning and career growth. JASA also recognizes employee contributions through various recognition programs, fostering a positive and rewarding workplace environment. JASA is an Equal Opportunity Employer that embraces diversity and ensures all qualified candidates receive fair consideration without discrimination based on protected classifications under federal, state, or local laws.
