This department is responsible for maintaining and managing public parks, historic landmarks, and leisure services that enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Among the city's treasured landmarks is the Turner Dodge House, a historic site that not only serves as a cultural and educational hub but also hosts a variety of special events, classes, tours, and community outreach activities. The City of Lansing prides itself on providing excellent parks and recreational services that foster community engagement and promote healthy lifestyles.
We are currently seeking a Part-Time Event Manager for the Turner Dodge House, a critical role within the Leisure Services Division of the Parks Department. This contract position offers an hourly wage of $20.00 and requires a minimum commitment of 18 hours per week, with flexibility to increase hours up to 40 depending on the event schedule. The contract is temporary and is set to expire on June 30, 2027, aligning with the City's fiscal year, with potential for renewal based on departmental needs and performance.
As the Event Manager, you will play an essential role in organizing, coordinating, and managing events held at the Turner Dodge House. This position demands a versatile skill set combining project management, event coordination, program development, and administrative duties. The successful candidate will be charged with developing comprehensive event packages tailored specifically for the Turner Dodge House, ensuring each event runs smoothly and meets community interests and expectations. Additionally, you will assist in city-wide interpretative programs and other special events, including educational classes, historic tours, and outreach programs that engage the wider Lansing community.
Your role will encompass staffing responsibilities including assigning, supervising, and counseling contractual and volunteer event staff. You will ensure that events are adequately staffed from set-up to tear-down, providing on-site assistance to guarantee seamless execution. The Event Manager will also be responsible for developing and implementing marketing plans to promote events and programs, enhancing public engagement and awareness through various media and community outreach efforts.
This position involves extensive administrative work, from managing records, processing receipts, reconciling expenditures, to procuring necessary supplies and equipment needed for events and programs. Communication and public relations are also integral components of the role, requiring interaction with volunteers, boards, and arts and humanities organizations. You may represent the City in media appearances, such as television and radio interviews, to promote events and programs.
Ideal candidates will hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree in parks and recreation, event management, or a related field, with a minimum of one year of relevant experience in property management, recreational programming, fundraising, marketing, or volunteer board coordination. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered. Furthermore, possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license and meeting the City’s driving record standards are mandatory requirements.
The City of Lansing is committed to equal opportunity and is a certified veteran-friendly employer. Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants and employees with disabilities during the application, hiring process, and employment. The commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment is central to the City’s hiring philosophy and operational practices. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to Lansing’s community heritage and cultural vibrancy through the stewardship of the Turner Dodge House’s events and programs.
