Job Description
The House Director position is a pivotal role within a collegiate housing environment, responsible for overseeing the comprehensive operations of the House. This establishment typically serves as a communal living space for college students, designed to foster community living while maintaining safety, cleanliness, and efficient functioning. As such, the House Director plays an essential part in ensuring the House remains a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment. This role involves managing day-to-day activities including maintenance, food services, cleanliness, and safety protocols. The House Director directly coordinates with the House Corporation Board, which provides oversight and guidance in the execution of these duties.
This part-time role, requiring a 20-hour workweek, demands the director to reside within the House for overnight supervision seven nights per week, except in cases where alternative adult supervision arrangements have been made in advance. This residency ensures immediate availability to respond to any emergencies, maintenance issues, or other concerns that arise among the residents. Additionally, the House Director’s responsibilities include managing the budget effectively, coordinating maintenance and repair tasks, supervising food service including meal planning, and fostering communication between residents, board members, and external service providers.
Key to this role is maintaining a safe and productive living environment for the students and staff. The House Director must employ critical thinking and quick response strategies during emergency situations, including contacting appropriate parties as needed. This entails an understanding and capability in handling inspections, fire drills, and adherence to university policies and other governing bodies’ rules. The position also involves collaboration with the kitchen staff and students to plan nutritious meals within budget constraints, alongside managing supplies and inventory related to kitchen and cleaning needs. Utilization of payroll and scheduling systems, such as Paylocity, to manage employee shifts and onboarding is another critical responsibility.
The role requires a high degree of organizational skill, communication ability, financial accountability, and interpersonal sensitivity, especially in interacting professionally with a diverse group including students, parents, alumnae, community members, and service providers. The House Director must balance managerial duties with problem-solving, demonstrating patience and flexibility while fostering positive relationships and a community atmosphere. Given the physical nature of the role, including climbing stairs and occasional lifting, the candidate must also be physically capable.
The benefits associated with this position include a furnished suite with all utilities covered, all meals provided when the college residents are present, and the opportunity to contribute directly to the well-being and development of the collegiate community. This position is an ideal opportunity for an individual who is organized, communicative, and dedicated to maintaining high standards of residential living within an educational institution.
