Job Description
The Salvation Army is an international evangelical movement and an integral part of the universal Christian church. Rooted deeply in the teachings and message of the Bible, The Salvation Army’s mission extends beyond spiritual guidance to include compassionate service, motivated by the love of God. The organization dedicates itself to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ while simultaneously meeting human needs in His name without discrimination. Established globally, The Salvation Army combines faith-based outreach with practical help, operating programs that support communities through meals, shelter, rehabilitation, and disaster relief efforts. Its multifaceted approach makes it one of the most recognized and respected charitable institutions worldwide, responding to immense social challenges with grace and dignity.
This position as a Cook is essential to fulfilling the day-to-day mission of The Salvation Army by ensuring the provision of nutritious meals to various programs within the facility. The role is full-time, working Monday through Friday from 9 am to 1 pm, with a starting hourly wage of $9.00. As a member of the kitchen staff, the Cook will plan, prepare, and serve meals in strict alignment with SERV Safe standards, ensuring safety, hygiene, and nutritional quality. Beyond cooking, the role encompasses overseeing donation pickups in collaboration with the Pantry Coordinator from local businesses such as Pantry Pal's, Papa John’s, Walmart, Kroger, Starbucks, Linnies, and Panera. This donation management is vital for sustaining ongoing programs and maximizing resources efficiently.
The role requires thorough adherence to safety protocols, including proper use of aprons, hair nets, gloves, clean attire, and closed-toed, non-skid shoes to maintain a hygienic kitchen environment. The Cook will set monthly menus, monitor dining room donation distribution, maintain detailed GIK reports and statistical records for submission to leadership, and perform routine cleaning tasks, ranging from exhaust hood maintenance to daily sweeping and wiping down of food prep areas. Communication with leadership regarding any risks, management needs, or property issues is key, ensuring smooth kitchen operations and compliance with standards.
Additionally, the Cook supports teamwork by collaborating closely with kitchen volunteers and other staff, fostering a positive work environment. There is also a supervisory component, overseeing volunteers in the kitchen and dining area. Physical demands include lifting and moving materials up to 25 pounds, standing for extended periods, and performing various manual tasks in a fast-paced kitchen setting. The position acknowledges the importance of inclusivity, welcoming veterans, people with disabilities, justice-impacted individuals, and those without college degrees to apply.
Working for The Salvation Army is more than a job; it is a commitment to service that impacts lives daily. Employees enjoy a supportive workplace culture that values their efforts and contributions. The Indiana Division, for example, highlights in its employee feedback that workers find meaningful engagement in their role, manageable stress levels, supportive management, flexible work options, and generous benefits including sick days and paid holidays. This role offers the opportunity not just to prepare food, but to be the hands and feet of a faith-centered organization that changes lives through compassion and service.
