Job Description

NSSRA, the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association, is a respected leader in providing specialized recreation programs and services for individuals with disabilities within their partner communities. Serving residents through year-round, community-based programs, NSSRA promotes inclusion and empowerment, fostering environments where children, teens, and adults with disabilities can engage fully and actively in recreational activities alongside their peers. Operating similarly to a park district but exclusively dedicated to residents with disabilities, NSSRA delivers meaningful experiences that enhance the quality of life and social connections for its participants within 13 partner communities. These communities include Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Highwood, Kenilworth, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Northfield, Riverwoods, Wilmette, and Winnetka.

The role of Child Care Counselor at NSSRA is vital in supporting the inclusion and well-being of children within before and after school or preschool programs tailored for participants with disabilities. This part-time, non-exempt position offers flexibility with hours ranging from 1 to 28 per week, depending on the program season, and pays between $16.00 and $22.70 per hour. The position requires a strong commitment to fostering inclusive peer interactions and providing supportive supervision to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants. Child Care Counselors actively engage with participants with disabilities, promoting positive experiences that enable these children to thrive in a nurturing environment alongside their peers.

Key responsibilities include supervision during recreation events, transitions, and transportation; maintaining timely and accurate documentation such as reports, evaluations, and timesheets; and communicating professionally with participants, parents, staff, and the community. NSSRA provides training and professional development opportunities to help counselors enhance their skills and expertise in working with individuals with disabilities. While no previous experience is necessary, a willingness to learn and a dedication to making a meaningful difference are essential.

This role demands reliable transportation to the designated program locations and a readiness to commit to the full program season, ensuring consistent attendance and support. NSSRA values teamwork, inclusivity, and a passion for enriching the lives of children and families. Benefits offered include a flexible schedule and a referral program, designed to accommodate varying availability while supporting work-life balance. If you are motivated to contribute to an organization focused on meaningful impact and community inclusion, the Child Care Counselor position at NSSRA provides a rewarding opportunity to grow professionally and personally while supporting an important cause.
