Job Description

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is a renowned nonprofit organization committed to fostering youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility throughout the region. With a rich history and deep community roots, the YMCA offers a variety of programs designed to engage and support individuals and families of all ages. The organization is well-known for its dedication to providing safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments that encourage growth and learning. Serving thousands of children and families each year, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee is a cornerstone for positive impact and community development in the region.

The YMCA is currently hiring for part-time Before and After School Childcare Assistants for its School Age Programs, a vital position within their School Age Services. This role is serving schools in the Montgomery County Sango community, including Barksdale Elementary, Carmel Elementary, East Montgomery Elementary, Moore Magnet Elementary, and Sango Elementary. The position is part-time but permanent and not restricted to temporary or summer-only employment. Starting pay begins at $15 per hour and may increase based on the applicant's childcare experience.

Working with the YMCA School Age Services means making a significant difference in children’s everyday lives. This role focuses on providing care and supervision before and after school hours from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM and from 2 PM to 6 PM, Monday through Friday. Childcare Assistants play an active role in leading groups of 15-20 children in engaging activities both indoors and outdoors. Responsibilities also include preparing and maintaining child-friendly program spaces, ensuring alignment with YMCA curriculum standards, and fostering positive relationships with children, their families, school staff, and YMCA team members.

The YMCA values employees who are enthusiastic, organized, and team-oriented with a strong passion for youth development. This role also requires excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, the ability to multitask in a busy environment, and a willingness to be physically active while working closely with children. Essential job functions include the ability to see and hear children clearly, to move quickly to ensure safety, lifting up to 40 pounds, and comfortably standing, bending, and being outdoors in various weather conditions.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be available for ongoing employment during the 2026-2027 school year. The position requires candidates to complete orientation, background checks, fingerprinting, and health-related forms prior to the first shift. In addition, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications (infant and pediatric) must be obtained within 30 days of hire. This job is ideal for individuals who enjoy empowering children, promoting healthy social, physical, and mental development, and contributing positively to their community during the school year.
