Job Description
The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is a community-focused organization dedicated to nurturing the potential of children, promoting healthy living, and fostering social responsibility. As a well-established nonprofit entity, the YMCA is committed to creating a positive and inclusive environment where individuals and families can thrive. Located in Middle Tennessee, this YMCA branch serves a wide population, providing a variety of programs designed to support youth development, health and wellness, and community engagement. The YMCA is well-known for its dedication to core values such as caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These values guide their efforts in offering impactful opportunities and resources that positively influence the lives of children and families across the region.
The position available is for a Part-time After School Childcare Assistant within the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s School Age Services. This role is specifically designed to support school-aged children in the Smyrna area of Rutherford County, including schools such as Rocky Fork Elementary, Stewarts Creek Elementary, Stewartsboro Elementary, and Thurman Francis Elementary. This is a part-time position with hours typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 2 PM to 6 PM, aligning with after-school hours to provide safe, engaging supervision and care.
This role is not a temporary or summer-only position, offering stable and ongoing employment throughout the entire school year of 2026 to 2027. Pay for the position starts at $15 per hour and can increase based on the childcare experience provided by the applicant. Being part of the YMCA team as a Childcare Assistant means you will play an integral part in creating a nurturing environment where children can grow socially, physically, spiritually, and mentally.
In the role, you will actively lead and engage groups of 15 to 20 children in a variety of enriching activities, both indoors and outdoors. Setting up spaces to be inviting, child-friendly, and clean is a key responsibility to ensure that the environment fosters learning and fun. Additionally, you will contribute to implementing quality curriculum components aligned with YMCA guidelines, ensuring each child receives meaningful engagement and care.
Building strong relationships with YMCA colleagues, school personnel, and families is vital to maintaining a supportive community network. Maintaining site licensing and adhering to quality standards is also an important aspect of this role, which contributes to the safety and well-being of the children in your care.
The YMCA values enthusiastic, organized, and team-oriented individuals who possess a passion for youth development. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys staying physically active and interacting with children in dynamic activities. Essential functions include the ability to see and hear children clearly, to move quickly to guarantee children’s safety, to lift up to 40 pounds, and to comfortably spend time standing, bending, and being outdoors in varying weather conditions.
This role also requires certain certifications and background checks before and shortly after starting employment, including orientation, background screenings, fingerprinting, abuse registry checks, submission of health forms, and training. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications for infant and pediatric care must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Joining the YMCA of Middle Tennessee as a part-time After School Childcare Assistant is more than a job; it is an opportunity to inspire and support children every day, empowering the next generation through education and dedicated care. If you are passionate about making a difference and ready to contribute your skills and energy to a meaningful cause, this position offers an excellent platform to grow professionally and personally while impacting your community positively.
