Job Description

Tyler Junior College (TJC) is a well-established community college located in Tyler, Texas, known for its commitment to providing high-quality education and fostering a vibrant campus environment. TJC offers a wide range of academic programs and extracurricular activities designed to support student success and community engagement. The college values diversity and inclusivity, ensuring equal consideration for all applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or other protected statuses. TJC is dedicated to creating a supportive and dynamic atmosphere where students, faculty, and staff can thrive both personally and professionally.

The position of Cheer Assistant at Tyler Junior College is a part-time, regular role based at the TJC Central Campus. This role is integral to the operations of the TJC Cheerleading Squad, which serves as a visible and positive presence promoting school spirit at athletic events and campus activities. The Cheer Assistant will play a crucial role in supporting the cheer program’s mission by fostering connections between the cheer team, athletes, spectators, and the wider campus community.

As a Cheer Assistant, you will collaborate closely with the Head Cheer Coach and participate actively in team coordination, event preparation, and game-day support. This position requires flexibility, including availability to work evenings and weekends to assist with games, practices, and special events throughout the academic term. The role is designed for individuals passionate about cheerleading, team spirit, and student engagement, who can contribute organizational and interpersonal skills to the program.

Your responsibilities will include supporting the team and staff during events, promoting the cheer program through community outreach and social media management, assisting with tryouts, fundraising activities, and maintaining necessary inventory and supplies. Additionally, travel with the squad to events such as cheer camps, performances, competitions, and out-of-town athletic events will be a regular aspect of this job, requiring a valid Texas driver’s license and a reliable driving record.

Given that this is a part-time position, the maximum allowable work hours are 18 per week. This constraint ensures that students or professionals seeking flexible employment have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully without compromising their other commitments. The role offers benefits including part-time retirement, access to campus facilities such as the library and fitness center, and free admission to various college events, enhancing the overall employment experience.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in cheerleading or student life, possess the ability to teach and critique cheer and dance techniques, and have an understanding of college student development. A USA Cheer Certification is required, reflecting a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and proficiency in cheerleading coaching and support.

This position emphasizes collaboration, organizational skills, customer service, and effective communication. You will be engaging with a diverse student population and staff, so cultural sensitivity and a respectful attitude toward different backgrounds are essential. The role also demands the physical capability to participate in activities such as standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and climbing stairs regularly.

Joining TJC as a Cheer Assistant means becoming part of a community dedicated to fostering student success through spirited involvement, teamwork, and mutual support. If you are enthusiastic about making a positive impact on the student experience and enjoy working in a dynamic collegiate environment, this role provides an excellent opportunity to develop your coaching and leadership skills while contributing to a proud tradition of excellence in collegiate cheerleading.
