Job Description

Birmingham Zoo Inc. (BZI) is a nonprofit organization accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, serving as a prominent regional tourist attraction for the greater Birmingham community and its surrounding areas. The Zoo is dedicated to advancing wildlife conservation through responsible animal care, education, and various local and global conservation efforts. Their mission, "Inspiring Passion to Conserve the Natural World," is central to all operations and outreach initiatives at the Zoo. As an educational and conservation-focused institution, Birmingham Zoo plays a critical role in environmental stewardship and wildlife preservation, engaging visitors to foster a deeper understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting biodiversity.

The Birmingham Zoo offers a range of experiences, from animal exhibits and interactive educational programs to special events that encourage community involvement and learning. As a nonprofit, the Zoo relies on dedicated staff members and volunteers who are passionate about conservation, education, and hospitality to deliver an exceptional guest experience. With its commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment, the Zoo actively promotes its core values of Passion, Excellence, Teamwork, Stewardship, and Inclusion.

The Cashier position at Birmingham Zoo Inc. is a frontline role crucial to supporting the Zoo’s operational needs and enhancing the guest experience. This position involves providing efficient, accurate, and welcoming service to visitors by handling admissions and other transactions at the Zoo’s front gate. Employees in this role are responsible for greeting guests, answering questions, and ensuring smooth processing of payments using point-of-sale systems. A Cashier’s duties also include maintaining cash handling accuracy, balancing transactions, and adhering to established protocols and safety guidelines to uphold the Zoo’s standards.

This role contributes significantly to preserving the welcoming and professional atmosphere at the Zoo. As an ambassador of the Birmingham Zoo, the Cashier must consistently exemplify professionalism and embody the institution’s values when interacting with guests and the public. The position also involves supporting daily operations by maintaining cleanliness, organization, and safety in assigned areas and collaborating with team members to meet guest needs efficiently.

The role is designed for individuals who are customer-service oriented and have an interest in working in a conservation-driven, mission-focused environment. Candidates with experience in cash handling, retail, tourism, zoological institutions, or similar settings will find this role particularly suitable. While no direct supervisory responsibilities are included, the Cashier is expected to model professionalism and accountability in adherence to the Zoo’s policies and safety procedures.

Employees in this position must be prepared to work varied schedules based on operational requirements, including weekends, holidays, and special events. They may also face physical demands such as standing for extended periods, moving through outdoor and indoor environments, and occasionally lifting or carrying items. Safety and adherence to established protocols are paramount, given the exposure to different work settings within the Zoo, some of which are outdoors and may involve uneven terrains and weather conditions.

Birmingham Zoo Inc. is committed to fostering an inclusive and safe workplace, encouraging applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. Reasonable accommodations are available to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform their job functions. Employment is at-will, and the Zoo reserves the right to modify job duties based on operational needs.

In summary, the Cashier position at Birmingham Zoo Inc. presents a valuable opportunity for those who wish to contribute to a mission-driven organization dedicated to wildlife conservation and education, while developing strong customer service and operational skills in an engaging and community-centered environment.
