Job Description
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is a well-respected public university known for its commitment to academic excellence, diversity, and community engagement. As part of the university, Dining Services is dedicated to providing high-quality food service and a positive dining experience for students, faculty, and staff on campus. PNW's Dining Services team plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming environment that supports the overall campus culture and promotes healthy, convenient dining options.
PNW is currently seeking Part-Time Cashiers to join their Dining Services team. This role is essential as the cashier acts as the front-line representative for Dining Services, responsible for interacting directly with guests, processing transactions smoothly, and ensuring a positive customer experience. The position requires approximately 19 hours per week and is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act, meaning that overtime pay rules apply. While benefits do not apply to this part-time role, it offers valuable experience within a university setting and opportunities for growth and development. The position involves working in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail, accuracy in handling payments, and friendly customer service are crucial.
The primary duties of the Cashier include operating point-of-sale systems to process meal plan transactions, cash, and credit card payments while maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the checkout area and dining spaces. The Cashier must also monitor dining room cleanliness, assist with stocking and rotating merchandise, and follow all university food service safety standards, including the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) protocols. The role demands excellent communication skills to answer customer questions, resolve concerns, and promote meal plan options and daily specials. Physical requirements involve frequently pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying weights between 25 and 50 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 60 pounds.
Purdue University Northwest values safety, integrity, and community inclusiveness. The university emphasizes adherence to policies that ensure sensitive and ethical handling of meal plan transactions and food safety practices. This position does not sponsor employment authorization, and employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of background checks and verification of professional references. Ideal candidates will have prior experience in customer service or cash handling but on-the-job training is provided. Experience specifically with PNW Dining Services is considered a plus.
Overall, this part-time cashier role at Purdue University Northwest's Dining Services offers an opportunity to contribute positively to campus life by ensuring an efficient and pleasant dining experience for the university community. It is ideal for individuals who enjoy customer engagement, have a keen eye for detail, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
