Job Description
The SoLa Foundation, the nonprofit affiliate of SoLa Impact, is dedicated to ending intergenerational poverty in South Los Angeles through focused community development and by creating access to economic and educational opportunities for both youth and adults. It is part of a larger organization that prioritizes investment in under-resourced neighborhoods, striving to increase access to jobs, mentorship, scholarships, and skill-building opportunities. The foundation’s programs target sectors like technology, entertainment, hospitality, and business, aiming to open multiple career pathways and foster sustainable growth in the community. Through its efforts, SoLa Foundation acts as a pivotal force for empowering individuals with the tools and opportunities they need to build stronger futures.
The 60th Street Café, an integral part of the SoLa Foundation's initiatives, serves a dual role as both a neighborhood café and a dynamic workforce training site. This café not only provides high-quality food and beverages to the local community but also functions as a practical training environment for students enrolled in culinary and hospitality workforce development programs. The Barista position at 60th Street Café is designed to be much more than a standard coffee-maker role. It demands a passionate, customer-focused individual who is community-minded and dedicated to exemplary service. The Barista will be responsible for preparing high-quality beverages, offering outstanding customer service, maintaining the café's cleanliness and organization, and supporting broader café operations. Additionally, this role includes mentoring and training students, helping them develop industry-ready skills in a supportive environment.
This position offers flexible part-time employment, up to 26 hours per week from Monday to Friday, with a competitive pay range of $18 to $21 per hour. The ideal candidate must be adaptable, able to perform in a fast-paced and multifaceted environment, assisting not only with barista duties but also with food service, catering support, cleaning, stocking, and event preparations whenever needed. Teamwork and a positive, solution-oriented attitude are essential as the role requires collaboration with kitchen staff, managers, workforce instructors, and fellow team members to ensure smooth and efficient daily café operations.
Beyond the practical responsibilities, the Barista plays a vital role in supporting the mission of SoLa Foundation by actively participating in the training and mentorship of students. This includes modeling professionalism, fostering a learning atmosphere of confidence and accountability, and helping students cultivate valuable career skills. A thorough knowledge of coffee products, brewing methods, and café equipment is fundamental, as is a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and customer hospitality. The role suits someone who is passionate about coffee, hospitality, and having a direct impact on community development. The café environment is designed to be inclusive, welcoming, and a space for growth—not only for customers but for the team and students alike.
Overall, this opportunity provides meaningful work in a supportive, family-oriented, and employee-focused atmosphere. The SoLa Foundation values integrity, trust, accountability, and collaboration, creating an environment where employees are encouraged to learn, grow, and contribute to lasting social change. Candidates local to Los Angeles are preferred, highlighting the organization’s commitment to strengthening the community by hiring locally. The organization champions equal opportunity and diversity, ensuring a fair hiring process without discrimination on any legally protected basis. This Barista position is an excellent fit for someone who seeks a rewarding, challenging role that combines hospitality skills with community impact and workforce development.
