Job Description
The New York State Parks system is dedicated to preserving natural beauty and providing recreational opportunities for residents and visitors across the state. As a vital part of the community services, the parks offer scenic landscapes, numerous facilities, and various activities to enhance the quality of life and promote environmental stewardship. Employees in this system play a crucial role in maintaining safe, clean, and inviting environments that visitors can enjoy year-round.
This role is for a Second Shift Park Maintenance Worker under the guidance of a Park Supervisor. The position primarily focuses on maintaining park cleanliness and safety, ensuring that park facilities remain operational and enjoyable for the public. This is a physically demanding job that involves handling a variety of maintenance tasks including landscaping, minor repairs, and vehicle operation. The maintenance worker assists in keeping roads and parking areas in good condition through cold patch repairs and manages basic facility upkeep such as restocking supplies, fixing restroom hardware, and unclogging plumbing fixtures. Additional responsibilities include parcel delivery across the park, overseeing proper opening and locking of restrooms, and supporting emergency responses such as traffic and crowd control.
Working in this role requires flexibility and readiness to work a variable schedule inclusive of evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet park operational hours and needs. The incumbent must be capable of performing medium to heavy physical labor, including lifting loads up to 50 pounds. The candidate needs to have basic skills in operating power equipment like push mowers and weed trimmers and performing simple preventive maintenance on such equipment. The position includes a component of vehicle operation where the employee must maintain a valid New York State driver’s license and demonstrate responsible driving practices.
This job offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the community by supporting one of New York's cherished natural resources. While the position has no formal minimum qualifications per civil service requirements, relevant experience in basic maintenance, landscaping, or similar fields can be advantageous. Employees in this role may have access to benefits such as participation in the New York State Employee’s Retirement System and eligibility for health insurance, dental and vision coverage. Vacation, sick leave, personal leave, and holiday leave may also be available contingent on time and service requirements. For those interested in public service, outdoor work, and community engagement, this role offers a meaningful and engaging career path within the New York State Parks system.
