Job Description
The City of Sacramento, located in Sacramento County, California, is the oldest incorporated city in the state, founded in 1849. It operates under a City Charter with a City Council-City Manager form of government, featuring a Mayor and Councilmembers who serve distinct districts within the city. The City Council establishes policies, ordinances, and land uses; approves the city budget, contracts, and agreements; and appoints key officials. Sacramento is committed to providing essential municipal services and maintaining a strong legislative agenda to support its community's growth and wellbeing. With a diverse population spread across eight council districts, the city places a high value on public service, community engagement, and professionalism.
The Department of Public Works, Parking Services Division, is currently seeking a part-time Parking Lot Attendant to provide outstanding customer service and assist with the efficient operation of municipal parking garages owned by the City of Sacramento. This role involves directing vehicles to available parking spaces, collecting and accounting for parking fees, and performing cashiering functions using automated revenue control equipment. The position offers an annual salary range from $40,200.14 to $56,565.64, providing a competitive compensation package for those committed to public service.
As a representative of the City of Sacramento, the Parking Lot Attendant plays a crucial role by interacting with the public, providing directions, and ensuring the safety and orderly flow of traffic within the parking facilities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and strong cashiering skills. The job requires availability to work weekends, holidays, and evening shifts, and the ability to handle responsibilities even under inclement weather conditions. Additionally, new hires may be eligible for recruitment and retention bonuses totaling up to $5,000 during their first year, highlighting the city's dedication to attracting and retaining motivated employees.
The position requires general supervision by a Parking Lot Supervisor, with possible indirect supervision from a Senior Parking Lot Attendant. Duties include operating cash registers, issuing validation tickets, performing routine equipment maintenance, reporting safety hazards or accidents, and reconciling daily receipts. The role also involves offering training assistance to less experienced employees, making it a supportive and collaborative work environment.
Candidates should have at least six months of full-time experience involving public contact and monetary transactions or equivalent education that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities. The role demands basic arithmetic skills, the ability to operate cash registers accurately, and excellent customer service aptitude. A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment. The City of Sacramento is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and inclusion, offering bilingual pay where operationally necessary, and adhering to the California Public Employee's Pension Reform Act (PEPRA).
The selection process includes submitting an online application by the designated cut-off dates, completing a training and experience exam, and potentially undergoing fingerprinting and pre-employment screening. Prospective employees are encouraged to verify their contact information and stay attentive to email communications throughout the hiring process. The City provides comprehensive application and technical support resources to assist applicants. Overall, this position offers an excellent opportunity for those seeking a public service role within a well-established municipal government environment that emphasizes professionalism, public interaction, and operational efficiency.
